Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 11, 2010 8:43 am I need to buy a whipper snipper / brush cutter to cut the jungle in our backyard, I can’t use a lawn mower because the ground is covered in rocks. I know very little about them, does anyone have any tips or recommendations as to what I should look for, any brands to consider etc. I don’t want to spend a fortune if I can help it. Any tips on how to use them would be good to, I have never used one. Thanks in advance. We now have a fuel one and that is easier to use, it's heavier but you don't have a cord that you have to drag around Re: I need to buy a whipper snipper/brush cutter, please hel 4Apr 14, 2010 10:07 am Wizard, Have you bought your whipper snipper yet? We have an old petrol one in our shed we have no use for. You could pick it up if you want. I think it was a ryobi!! Kay A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. Battery life is poor, and the power just goes after about 5 minutes, after that you're basically massaging the grass instead of cutting. Re: I need to buy a whipper snipper/brush cutter, please hel 6Apr 14, 2010 7:39 pm Ok , you only get what you pay for, and this much is true of whipper snippers. Do not buy an electric one. as they are made to be gutless enough to ensure you don't cut through the cord, which means they are too gutless to cut grass (Lawn not a problem) Get a petrol one as a minimum. Now comes the fun part Go cheap, and you will spen 1/2 an hour trying to start the unit, and it will cut out once it gets too hot (About 30min) We use Sthil brand. Starts 2nd go, after you have prmed the motor, and runs all day. they are a bit more expensive, but then do you want to lose 1/2 an hour every time you use your cheap model, or do you want a unit that starts and runs first go? good luck Adrien Re: I need to buy a whipper snipper/brush cutter, please hel 7Apr 19, 2010 6:14 pm straight shaft ones more effective/efficient than bent. Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: I need to buy a whipper snipper/brush cutter, please hel 8Apr 19, 2010 10:53 pm Yep the bent ones are the ones that someone has lost their temper with and chucked on the ground Good way to remember We could give many tips but once you have done a few laps you will pick up on it easy as. I will say that of course a petty one is the go over electric. Not that there are many electric ones available So with the petty ones, use some of the stuff you put on the tank that stops the carby getting gunked up if you haven't used it in a while. I borrowed a mates chainsaw that had not been used in a while. I near threw it over the fence, then nearly went round and jumped on it!!!! The thing was gunked up and it would not start for a good hour!!! I didn't give up and it did start. I had an arm like popeye. I took back the beers I gave him as a fee for it's use. http://www.stihl.com.au/Products/subcat ... egoryID=40 Re: I need to buy a whipper snipper/brush cutter, please hel 9Apr 20, 2010 12:56 pm 4 stroke with the interchangable disc and cord ive wastred money on two 2 strokes over the years we have 9000sq block and it has never failed on all the edging and all the thick marshmellow stem, salvo jane etc etc cost about 400+ bucks fropm memory got it from bunnies ( i know, i know ) Thank you @.
