I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Sincerely, Anonymous Re: Mice 65May 06, 2011 10:41 pm Best bait I've used in snap traps is almond kernel. I feed a stripped cat5 wire through the center and tie it to the trap, can't be licked off like peanut butter can be and usually the trap can be reset immediately after catching a mouse without having to re-bait. Ultrasonic scarers are useless because they can't maintain a constant frequency beyond a few feet and cannot penetrate plaster walls. The best trap imo is the one finniky mentioned, the square bent tilting tube type, they'll even work un-baited because mice love tunnels. Re: Mice 66May 06, 2011 11:03 pm whattodo If you are plugging up any holes - use steel wool. They can't eat through it. Hope none of them have fillings!!!!! Yeah, i've been told plug with tin foil, as long as they're not trapped inside somewhere My building thread : viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36059 Paid initial deposit 24/7/10 Tender appointment 20/8/2010 Flooring and tile appointment 25/9/10 Colour and Electrical appointment 13/9/10 December site start delayed Site start (YAY!) 17/1/11 Slab pour 1/2/2011 Re: Mice 67May 06, 2011 11:14 pm Our mouse or whatever it is has even dragged the trap around the room. It's taken all our bait and has managed to set off the traps. It's out-smarting us. I've brought those "clever mouse trap" where the mouse goes into the tunnel to get to the bait and the door closes. I don't want to use any poison as I don't want to find a dead mouse somewhere in the house that has rotted away. Belabelinda I think we share the same critter. Cannot catch ours. Re: Mice 68May 06, 2011 11:26 pm We have caught heaps, we got the traps from Safeway the silver plastic ones. We use cheese, omi, they are disgusting. They were walking past me, like they owned the house, but not for long. If there is one in a trap and DH is not home, I put on my gloves and put the whole trap into the outside bin, until he gets home. Re: Mice 69May 07, 2011 10:21 am We went from 0 mice to a fair few very rapidly they were even getting into our kitchen. I had to think about how they could be getting in as it is a new house with door seals etc. It wasn't until I saw one jump out of our toaster and behind the oven that I worked it out. Our oven is hard wired and the electricians we so great they left a 20cm square hole to pull one damn wire through. I pulled the oven out and patched up the hole, problem solved. Went to the local bunning and bough lots of mouse traps and set heaps in the garage. I have caught around 20 in total, the trick was to make sure you have multiple traps and set the thing on "knife edge" so you wont miss to many. I would never use poisons due to the fact it may affect animals up the food chain and there is no need the humble old fashioned mouse trap does the trick, just get lots of them and set them all around the problem area. PS they cannot resist bread. Re: Mice 70May 07, 2011 11:31 am Peanut butter here. We had one behind the fridge on Thursday night. DH and I were both a little tiddly and were in hysterics everytime it popped it's head out!! Got him that night. The whole trap gets thrown out here - no discarding of the mouse, it is the whole kit and caboodle into the bin. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Mice 71May 07, 2011 11:52 am Heard mice/a mouse when we got home from bali last week. Hadn't heard them since. but yesterday morning thought I could smell a mouse whiff when I opened the pantry. Meant to mention it to Hubby today and organise some traps but he'd beaten me to it. Had 2 mice caught this morning. obviously overnight. No bait but put next to where they run and they were set to go off. They try to run through the gap and "snap!" gone. Hopefully that's it. BUT we'll see. Traps are reset for tonight. I came home to find remnants of tin foil through my house the other day where a mouse decided to try and chew through the bits I'd used to block up the holes. These have no been replaced with steel plates (courtesy of Dad) and I've plugged all the weepholes with rolled up chicken wire (roll into a sausage shape and stuff in holes). Jayne Re: Mice 75May 12, 2011 1:14 pm I haven't read through the whole thread, so apologies if this has already been covered and it may well be a silly question. Is there any way to easily distinguish between native and introduced mice? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Mice 77May 12, 2011 1:49 pm We live near pretty open land and there are mice around our house sometimes and in the alfresco. There's none in the house but then we have a cat. I'm just wondering if the ones I see are native or not. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Mice 78May 12, 2011 2:02 pm We have them in the yard, and have heard them in the roof (mice and rats), but none in the house... as yet... Re: Mice 79May 12, 2011 3:41 pm just Erin We have them in the yard, and have heard them in the roof (mice and rats), but none in the house... as yet... Although with two indoor cats, I dont think they'd last very long in the house... They ate our easter eggs, the day before easter. Have caught alot Erin, in the house havn't seen any for about a week. Re: Mice 80May 12, 2011 4:27 pm We've been in our house for five weeks and we've caught four of the little blighters in the garage. The last one was last night. In the first week I heard some noises in the wall near the front door which freaked me out. Woke DH up to listen but he wouldn't hang around for long enough. Think he thought I was nuts Haven't heard anything since though. |
