Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 17, 2010 1:17 am Hi there We have a design for both our front and backyards - it will invovle footings, walls (inc retaining walls), retic, lawn and brick plantar boxes. If we are hiring our own contractors do we need 1) to make sure they have their own insurance? 2) do we need to take out insurance ourselves in case someone gets hurt on site? If yes, what type? ie so we need owner/builder insurance? 3) re: the brick walls - if we just get a brickie to do the walls do we get the same 6 year structural warranty you get when you build a house? 4) do we need to apply for a building licence or does the brickie do that? thanks wallywombat (aka the muddle headed wombat) about to build our first home! Do you worry about this when you get an electrician to install a light fitting in your house? Or a concreter to construct your driveway? 2. You should already have public liability insurance as part of your home insurance policy, which will cover you for, say, a loose roof tile suddenly falling on a worker. If they slice off a finger with their own power tool, that'd be their lookout, wouldn't it? 3. No idea. Ask the brickie what warranty he provides. Check whether he's a member of any professional associations that give some sort of guarantee. 4. Why would you need a building licence? You may need a permit for some of the work (eg retaining walls or structures over a certain height or size), so check with your council.
