Re: What mulch is safe to use next to the house on a garden bed? 3Feb 12, 2010 9:59 am The bed is the same level as the slab and is quite small. I'm pretty sure it is not against any weep holes but i'll double check. What should I do to waterproof it and can I then mix the soil with compost or manure and what are the options for mulch on top. Many thanks. Re: What mulch is safe to use next to the house on a garden bed? 4Feb 12, 2010 12:20 pm Fu is the one for Garden knowledge I don't know where you are... Re: What mulch is safe to use next to the house on a garden bed? 5Feb 13, 2010 12:35 pm If white ants are a concern it is nothing to do with the mulch. It is about giving the buggers access to your home. Avoid garden beds against a wall where ever possible. In such cases, ensure a termite barrier is not buried. Keep the soil and mulch level (even pebbles) as close to the slab height as possible. Any higher and that is where the problem can start. Many people will have soil up against a home and then blame something more trivial for the termite problem. So with that in mind the same mulch principles apply. green mulches are the very best. They don't hold water, they don't blow around and they begin a cycle of healthy soil. They feed the soils. Very important. This doesn't match with the Termite people... when we had them to come and check it at 12 months, the guy said we need to call them back as soon as the gardens are finished to recheck it. He commented that we had sections that weren't below the soil surface which is apparently a no-no. He said to make sure that the pipe was well below the soil level (not exposed) and it should go under any concrete. The type we have (which is quite standard from what I can tell) works by the chemical leaching out into the soil... so it has to be buried. That would apply to barrier methods, like Termimesh which we have, rather than chemical methods. Re: What mulch is safe to use next to the house on a garden bed? 10Feb 15, 2010 3:59 pm My house has raised paving, lawn and garden beds against it, am starting to worry about termites. Has anybody heard of or used this ? Looks like a good system and I believe it would work but is pretty expensive for essentially some pine pegs ! http://www.greenpest.com.au/ cheers Re: What mulch is safe to use next to the house on a garden bed? 11Feb 20, 2010 8:33 pm Cypress mulch is naturally termite resistant. It is having a garden bed along the home that is the risk. Block of two storey townhouses requires painting on the roof. A brick parapet wall separates each unit and extends above the tiled roof.
