I've been searching for suitable material for some raised garden beds and am coming unstuck.
Basially what it has come down to is untreated hardwood sleepers - seems to be the most cost effective in the area, as opposed to concrete products, recycled products, natural rock and railway sleepers.
Is using untreated timber in the garden a bad idea? Will I inevitably attract Termites? Is it preventable?
I plan on building beds similar to the image below. I will also line the sides with black plastic, leaving the bottom to drain freely. Is there any seal I can use on the timber to help protect against soil and moisture - or would any old paint do?

Also (as an after-thought) - what about old timber fence palings? I have a very large pile of them and they seem to be in ok condition. I'm not sure if they are treated or not, but they are pretty old (the garden would be non-edible anyway).
