We are about to start building our decking (approx. 10 x 4 m) and are wondering what Merbau boards look better (aesthetically) - 90mm or 140mm??
Any suggestions/opinions will be highly appreciated.

Dukekamaya, is the 140 x 25 mm Merbau more expensive than 140 x 19mm? braveheart Re: Merbau boards 90mm or 140mm? 6Oct 08, 2009 12:20 pm Yes, its more timber. If your planning on using the 19mm thick 140mm boards, make sure there is good air-flow under the deck, I definately wouldnt use them if its close to the ground. The 140mm x 19mm boards generally aren't sold in NSW, there is however also a 140 x 22mm board as well. Re: Merbau boards 90mm or 140mm? 8Oct 15, 2009 8:04 pm Pix, whilst I do agree with you. This is not the place for your arguement. Braveheart has a personal choice to make and does not need the thread hijacked with guilt trips or attacks on choices. I'm more than happy for you to start a thread on the topic. Re: Merbau boards 90mm or 140mm? 9Oct 16, 2009 2:05 pm I was merely posing a question. If, in doing so, it has caused anyone to actually *think* about the impact of their choices then that's a good thing I'm not seeking to lecture anyone or take the high moral ground. Rather my intentions are to have everyone (including *myself*) consider their choices thoughtfully. It seems to me that this thread began by someone seeking opinions about Merbau. Although they were asking about sizes specifically I merely offered an opinion from a generalised perspective. If my opinion is not welcome that is one thing and goes to the heart of the purpose of this forum. If my opinion causes discomfort because it makes others feel uncomfortable about their choices...then that is something they will have to deal with I merely tried to be constructive. If it has been misconstrued...cest la vie Pix Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Re: Merbau boards 90mm or 140mm? 10Sep 05, 2011 8:25 pm We just cant decide to go with 90mm or 140mm... We will be doing our alfresco (4m x 9m) side gates, and front porch done as well. We want them all the same size especially the front as you will notice the difference...help please Re: Merbau boards 90mm or 140mm? 14Sep 07, 2011 11:18 pm I thought the same as Pix. Does it hurt to let people see the other side? Australia is the 3rd worst member in energy usage and sustainability in the OECD. We are miles behind most developed countries in using sustainable building techniques and conserving energy. Doesn't hurt for consumers to make an informed choice does it? Bashworth have you got any pics? I am curious to see what is the effect like. Re: Merbau boards 90mm or 140mm? 19Sep 08, 2011 5:44 pm For our 7m x 4m deck, we used 140 'no nail' boards. I love the look for the big area, but for a smaller porch area I would probably have chosen the 90 as it would have been more in proportion! Side gate I'd probably use 90 as well.
