Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Jun 28, 2009 7:54 am Hi there, I am thinking of buying an outdoor spa. I notice there seem to be quite a few second hand spas (ebay etc) and wonder why? Is an outdoor spa too much effort? Hard to maintain? Expensive?? I was thinking of a smallish one with really good jets for soothing muscles etc. Just a 3-4 seater. Does anyone have opinions on the value of an outdoor spa? Would love to hear your honest thoughts. Cheers! Re: Outdoor Spa - what are they REALLY like?? 2Jun 28, 2009 8:15 am We bought a spa for the last house we owned. it was great for the kids, But we had a very very hard time keeping the water good and at the right level (chemically). As well as our pump went a few times John, Tarin and the Kids Built and moving in to the Regent Grande with Masterton homes http://thebrownsaremovingtothecountry.blogspot.com Re: Outdoor Spa - what are they REALLY like?? 3Jun 28, 2009 9:22 am I have a good friend who has one in her new house and had one in her last house. Its a large 6-7 seater though. Loves it! heck we all love it. we intend to have an outdoor one when we have the $ Re: Outdoor Spa - what are they REALLY like?? 5Jun 28, 2009 9:37 am Planning on a six seater spa one day + sauna. Ruled out the pool option as it is too much work for too little use and to much yard wastage... as my parents would tell you. They would fills theres in if they could. Re: Outdoor Spa - what are they REALLY like?? 6Jun 28, 2009 12:40 pm looking to get a decent bargain off ebay, no point buying a new one the mark up on them is ridiculous! my wife wanted a pool and ive had 2x pools in the past and its always constant maintenance and with small kids its a worry. we are planning a proper room for our spa, to back onto our laundry and a powder room for wash down and changing (keeping all the water in 1 area) have been looking into the most effective way to heat the water, either to piggyback onto a solar hydronic slab heating system, simple heat pump ($$$) or gas boiler. 2nd-Fix | Blog Building with Desyn Homes previously with the insolvent Endeavour Homes Re: Outdoor Spa - what are they REALLY like?? 7Jun 28, 2009 1:14 pm The worst part of my garden is like that because that is where the spa is going. I love it when there is a storm or it is raining really hard and the rain is freezing and the water is so warm I am having a square 4 post patio and then a raised deck around the spa. No room for a bigger one though. I already have some pipes in ready when I paved the area. Re: Outdoor Spa - what are they REALLY like?? 8Jun 28, 2009 4:28 pm A friend of mine who has 3 small kidlets had a 6 seater spa...the kids always pee in it it is white and the water is yellow she asks people over all the time and they actually go in it I guess they havent heard of testing the water or chemicals! I'm thinking like a hob covered in slate, with a nice bright white spa in the corner of the yard with a slate wall on both corner sides. If that makes sense? The prices on eBay are so low! But seriously, is cost and maintenance a BIG issue with an outdoor spa? Can I just buy a second hand one? Why are there so many listed on ebay? I should probably tell you all that I actually have an inground pool already, solar heated and maintained by my husband. I suspect that if I get a spa it will be up to be to do the necessary work. That's ok, I just want to know what I am in for! If anyone has suggestions re brand etc please jump into this debate! Re: Outdoor Spa - what are they REALLY like?? 16Jun 29, 2009 1:08 pm old man bought his on a impulse buy and thought he 'needed' it it never got used only by me and 3 yrs after he traded it in for a grand water feature; paid 9k and sold it on ebay for 5.5k good bargains to be had. make sure you do your research, dont buy a dud! 2nd-Fix | Blog Building with Desyn Homes previously with the insolvent Endeavour Homes Re: Outdoor Spa - what are they REALLY like?? 17Jun 29, 2009 1:24 pm We have an outdoor spa but we only use it in the summer months. The cost of heating it adds about $50 to our quarterly electricity bill. The chemicals are quite expensive and you do need to check the levels regularly and keep it well maintained. We use it quite a bit and the kids love it, I put them in a swimmer nappy which works fine. So to answer your question, yes it does cost a few $$ to run one but some people prefer to pay $99 a month on foxtel, we prefer to run our spa and relax in it whilst watching free TV I have no idea why there are so many on eBay. Perhaps just another one of the signs of the recent economic crisis? It's probably one of the first things that has to go.
