Hi, we are undecided whether to lay our tiles in our ensuite and bathroom horizontally or vertically on the walls, Our ensuite will be tiled floor to ceiling.
Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks

It's best to match the width of the wall tiles to the size of the floor tiles, if you know what I mean. I personally like the look of horizontal tiles when going floor to ceiling. Built with Bentley homes in Doreen All moved in Dec 2009 Now for the garden! Our stuff so far viewtopic.php?f=31&t=16532 Re: vertical or horizontal lay tiles 8Jun 08, 2009 11:05 pm I think it depends a bit on the size of the area. Do you want it to look wider and taller (floor tiles going 'across' the room and wall tiles going 'up'), or do you want it to look longer (floor tiles running 'down' the room and wall tiles running 'across' the walls)? We had 200x200 for the floor and 200x300 for the walls. So didn't really have any choice, so we went vertical with our walls tiles. Though I think even if we had a choice I still would have gone vertical. It really does come back to the whole picture you're trying to create in the bathroom. Use your tiles to enhance the style. Re: vertical or horizontal lay tiles 9Jun 11, 2009 12:59 pm Most importantly if laying large format glazed tiles horizontally make sure you lay them soldier (one on top of the other patern). People make the mistake of laying tiles in a brick pattern. By nature all tiles especially glazed products have a bow in them. We could be talking .5=1.5mm or so. When layed side by side this is not noticeable as all the tiles bow the same way. In a brick bond pattern you can introduce basket weaving, where there is the step from the middle of one tile to the end of the tile below it. You mention that you are using 30x60 floors- what type of drainage system are you using? If you are using standard floor wastes achieving a fall will be difficult. The other point is that is you use any floor/wall combination with two different tiles, be it from the same manufacturer or not - you can not guarantee you can line up wall and floor joints. All tiles when fired vary in shade and calibre form batch to batch. Calibre is the sizing of the tile. On batch could be spot on 300x300, the next 298x298....This is not a reflection of the quality of the tile just a fact on tile production. On lay out we have designed bathrooms where we achieve a feature wall by using the same tile as the other wall but laying it horizontally. The eye is always drawn to the change in orientation - without introducing another colour to your pallete. Just a few thoughts for you... Charlie Re: vertical or horizontal lay tiles 11Jun 16, 2009 10:48 am Can I add my ensuite to the question of tile laying?! My tiles are 300x600mm ... honed on the floor, polished on the shower walls (a plain creamy coloured tile with sort of marbling through it) ... space is pretty small ... roof is pretty low (it is being put under a veranda) ... should the tiles run the length or the width of the ensuite? And I'm assuming stacking vs brick pattern is better given the advice above? Do I ask for tiles to be layed up the walls on the general floor area? (not sure if that makes sense ... but I seen often with a small tile they put one up the wall ... but mine are large so don't know how that works!!) (architect has drawn itty tiles - obviously NOT getting those!) hmmm ... can't seem to add a file today ... plans at: http://lucyshouseblog.blogspot.com/2009 ... tchen.html the shower part: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/mr ... directlink Many thanks for any opinions/advice!
