Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 23, 2008 9:34 am For those who have synthetic turf (or have any knowledge relating to it) do you think the following is a fair/good/decent price?
$1650 for full supply and install (excluding excavation as it was not needed). This is for an all rounder type of turf from m.agic turf and covers about 12m2. [sneakersss] Re: My synthetic turf quote... 2Oct 24, 2008 9:04 am Hi Missy,
We got quoted $85 sqm. Considering we needed 80 sqm of the stuff this is not an option. Your's works out to be 137.50 per sqm. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. Fields Brought Established. Re: My synthetic turf quote... 4Oct 24, 2008 1:57 pm Mum and Dad have just put in synthetic turf, and I think paid about $120 sm. This included excavation, base, turf, pins and sand. The whole job took about 6 hours and it looks brilliant!! I believe the more you order, the price per sm drops.
Price wise, I guess it all depends on what type of synthetic turf you put down. Mum and Dads is very fine and thick with small amounts of brown mixed in with the green to make it look very natural. There's came from here, and is manufactured in Australia: http://www.newturf.com.au/lawns.html I'll put up some pics a little later of the install. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! It was approx $70 a square meter laid. The front had road base laid underneath just incase anyone drove on it, it would not sink. We had many people stop and knock on the door to find out what it was as it looked that good. My hubby was able to sell the lawn mower the edger and the whipper snipper. He then got his weekends back and had time to hang out with thye family. I have to say we paid a little more to get the most realistic as it is an investment. We asked the installer where he laid the different types he had and he gave us some addresses to look at. This gave us a good indication on a large scale how it looked once laid. Thats how we ended up choosing the one we had. We had the front and back done. We have a dog and it caused no problems at all out the back and we had road base laid underneath the front so if cars drove on it, it would not sink. Sorry I have gone on for so long and I know its not for everyone but it really is fantastic and we will be doing it again at the next house. They say you make your money back within 4 years especially from the water conservation. No fertilizers also. I notice that you can see the sections laid. Like the lay of the blades is different. I know that there is usually a direction the turf lays in on nearly every type available. It would be some extra effort and small expense but how good would it look if the turf was cut into narrower widths and layed in alternate directions to give that ultra manicured look. like when you see the golf greens on telle or the MCG from above during the cricket. They mow the turf in one direction every time to give a plaid like pattern. Re: My synthetic turf quote... 7Oct 24, 2008 9:11 pm Yours looks lovely PK.
YSSIM, I picked up a brochure from Poynton's in Essendon which quoted it as $80 per sqm including installation the other day. Does anyone know what's involved in installing it yourself? Re: My synthetic turf quote... 9Oct 24, 2008 11:24 pm I know a bloke who's son is doing it. I am pretty sure he is a guest on this forum from time to time. Maybe he or his son could join up and post on here Re: My synthetic turf quote... 10Oct 25, 2008 8:18 am Fu Manchu that looks great! can I ask if they ever smell "plasticey" in the sun when they warm up? It would be some extra effort and small expense but how good would it look if the turf was cut into narrower widths and layed in alternate directions to give that ultra manicured look. Fu, The plasticy smell only cam if I didn't hose down where the dog weed other wise no plastic smell and they do the alternate blade width, it was just another $20 a sqm. We just couldn't stretch to that one. You know I never noticed the laying lines until you just mentioned them. I supopose we never really stood back all that ofetn and checked out our front lawn. Donuts the DIY can bee done my BIL did his but he didn't need any joins as it was a smaller area. They people who supply usually have a brochure on how to do it yourself and the prep needed. One thing I have to mention is the heat. If you are puttingit down out the back where children play I would put up a shade sail as it gets quite hot underfoot. Re: My synthetic turf quote... 11Oct 26, 2008 7:06 am I must say that I just don't understand why people go with this option. I know you don't have to mow etc so maintenance is "better". But hey, it's just not grass. It looks fake, is hot under foot and not good to run around and play on with the kids. I find it bizarre. I hope that it doesn't catch on and am glad to say that I haven't seen it here in Brisbane. But it's probably lurking out in a new subdivision somewhere.
We lived in Melbourne for a while in a new estate and did see it one time. Each to there own. Variety is the spice of life and all that. When you physically can't water your lawns due to water restrictions, but take pride in your garden, this is the best option for that all year round lush look. In the right environment, it looks fantastic. Mum and Dad spent the money and had real turf layed after they finished building the units. It was a very bad laying job, and after watering the new turf for the allowed 6 weeks (??) it died the following Summer due to lack of rainfall. There is nowhere to put a tank (although filling it would be difficult with no rain anyway...). The rest of the garden has strived through a lot of hard work with digging, fertilizing, mulching and watering on the one morning for 2 hours they are able to. The so called 'turf' (dead in most places and patchy weeds in the remainder) next to it looked disgusting, so they opted for synthetic. It looks fantastic. The neighbours have a similar synthetic on their front lawn...and it took several months for us to realise as it looks so natural. Mum and Dads has only been layed for about 3 weeks, so it still looks 'new', and it hasn't rained a decent amount in those 3 weeks to help settle all the sand in. The kids love it, and it looks fabulous. There are good quality synthetics, and there are some that really do just look fake. If you find one that looks real, then it's pretty hard to tell the difference from a distance (except all the real grass in Melbourne is now browning off) I'll post some pics later. I would dearly love it in my new garden once the house is built, but it is expensive, and would rather get window furnishings and furniture first... Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I just paid $610 delivered for Palmetto for 60m2 Hi Adrian, The price quoted was for everything for installation. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. Re: My synthetic turf quote... 14Oct 27, 2008 10:03 am I think the trick with the synthetic turf is not to lay it like carpet. When it's layed in big square patches - Miami style - it can look very fake, even more obvious in the height of summer.
When its used as an infill between curved beds and you use synth turf that looks good I think it can be very effective. That's the way I'm thinking of using it - masses of deep garden beds with there own design, plenty of flowering plants, and the turf is incidental to the whole garden design, not the main feature. To me this is good...Paula's again...I particularly like the designer leaf litter.... http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii130/johnspj_photos/P3270101.jpg Yes, I'd love to hae a luscious natural lawn but as a Melbournite I simply can't afford to waste water on a lawn. And as far as the heat that may come off it...can't be worse than bare dirt and scancky looking grass. Well that's my conceited opinion anyway.... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: My synthetic turf quote... 15Oct 27, 2008 10:50 am sorry guys. i didn't realise anyone was posting here. i somehow didn't get notification that people were replying?
anyway... Adrian, it is for a full supply and install. Excluding the excavation because we did that already. They have to do a thick base (around 100mm) so could explain 'part' of the high cost. Stormy, thanks for the link. I'm in the process of getting another quote for comparsion. But since it's only a small area (6m x 2m) we're contemplating doing it ourselves to save more cash. Doesn't look that hard to do. But I reserve the right to retract that line if/when we finish laying it down. Gweluphome, your pics look great! and your old house, too. why would you leave?! hehe Donuts, thanks for the heads up. I'll try contact them, too. Hoffies, yes each to their own. This was a compromise as other half doesn't want any grass 'cos he will be the one mowing it. [sneakersss] Re: My synthetic turf quote... 16Oct 27, 2008 12:12 pm Hi yssim,
