Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 06, 2008 5:59 pm Cubby is finished have to address the next things on the to_do_list....
First part of the backyard which will be landscaped…though I'd take some before photos and start a new thread… First Stage Intention is to have deep garden beds with some swales and small rises for interest, space for water tanks and a paved area near the house… Working on scale plan will post when I'm happy with it. For context there's about 15 odd metres between the cubby and the house… And yes that is a Leighton Green planted right next to the fence...that's gonna have to go... Re: Château TDL: The Backyard Chapter....First Cut Plan 07 Oct 2Oct 06, 2008 7:21 pm what about creating some garden beds in the middle too so you can walk around and through the garden. The kids would have a great time tearing around the circuit that it would create. might mean little or no lawn too. use sawdust or gravel in between the gardens.
A garden I saw on gardening australia the other night reminded me how much me and my sister, when we were little, used to love tearing through it when mum and dad were visiting that guy in Lillydale. heaps of fun If that were my back garden, my brain would be going mental with different ideas for designs Re: Château TDL: The Backyard Chapter....First Cut Plan 07 Oct 3Oct 07, 2008 4:22 pm OK first cut at a bit of a plan for the backyard…
Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The plan is that the house will eventually have a rumpus room added to the back of it, so the existing outline of the house is shown in blue and I've added the six metre by four odd metre extension. This creates a neat little space outside which I thought I'd pave (pink) and have a raised formal garden bed in some sort of timber structure forming an L shape (yellow). This would provide a bit of a wind break, a screen for the water tanks (hatched blue) once the plants inside grow, and I could build some seats off it. I've got an idea for what I'm going to do here from this months BH&G magazine. Kind of an "adult" area. I'd have a grantic sand path leading to the cubby (orange) and figuring that the kids are going to be tearing around the cubby I figure the path should go all the way around with a bit more space around the back for some outdoor kids furniture, hidey hole, etc…got a furniture idea from BH&G . The path is already the swathe that DS1 has cut through the weeds to the cubby…. The hatched green area would be all garden beds, predominantly natives (trees, shrubs, and groundcovers), but I'd create some highs and lows in the garden bed with probably a bit of sand/sawdust (thanks FuMan) so that the kids can round around in the garden beds…I want it to be very much a kids area. Garden beds would continue around the back so that there's a hedging plant along the back fence - only a matter of time before the farm behind us gets sold so might as well prepare now for it - be a few years before the plants get that high that they would block the view. The existing shed would be screened off either like Paula has it (hope you don't mind Paula for reposting your photo ) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Either with the brush fencing, or with just the fence structure and espalier a plant onto it. I need to have a utility area for composting, hiding the trailer, etc., and need to be able to push the trailer through to the back and hence the amount of "white space". The white space at the moment is undecided - ideally grass but if you can't water it why bother, and along the side of the house is again undecided, but probably a hard surface for cricket, bikes, and stuff….when budget permits….the side bit will be last bit we do as everything for the backyard has to come through there. Just a reminder - here's the back of the house the rumpus would come out where the first two panels of iron are. Need to get me an architect that will design a sympathetic extension…. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The style would be very much informal, rambling, not too much structure…edging materials I'm considering are simple recycled brick edging to match the house or the FormBoss metal edging system (http://www.greenlines.com.au/index.php) although it's a bit 'spensive for the amount that I need. If you've got any thoughts, ideas, comments,…please feel free. Re: Château TDL: The Backyard Chapter....First Cut Plan 07 Oct 4Oct 07, 2008 11:13 pm Gee the back of your house is nice Mike. I hope you find someone to do your extension sympathetically too ... so it still ooks as nice at the back.
Where is your clothesline going to go in the back yard? Re: Château TDL: The Backyard Chapter....First Cut Plan 07 Oct 6Oct 11, 2008 8:10 pm Started on the backyard today…basically deweeding and marking out….some piccies showing the markings matching the drawing I posted above…still a long way to go but it’s good to see it on the ground.

Terrence Malick Re: Château TDL: The Backyard Chapter....First Cut Plan 07 Oct 10Oct 11, 2008 8:51 pm The backyard plan looks great. I love the cubby - we had one at our old house and the kids loved it. We haven't built one this time , kids are 11 and 8, so pretty much past the cubby stage - I miss all the picnics and tea parties out there. Have you thought about adding some swings on the side?
ours got a lot of use. Re: Château TDL: The Backyard Chapter....First Cut Plan 07 Oct 11Oct 12, 2008 12:03 pm Looks fantastic!!
I'd make your paths a little wider. You also have a lot of garden bed on the water tank side - it would look greatto break that up with smaller clumps of beds (does that make sense?) and have some river rocks through there. You can use my fence pic anytime Paula Re: Château TDL: The Backyard Chapter....First Cut Plan 07 Oct 12Oct 12, 2008 3:17 pm Hopefully it's just the photo foreshortening things but the paths are 900 mm wide...I'm intending to break up the big garden bed with a swale...I'll talk to my digger mate and see what he can do...might even cut the swale across the path and make a bridge and put the river pebbles below.... PM me your email. I have a build excavation calculator you can use based on your plans to double check what your builder is telling you.
