joins in artificial quartz

The sizeof benchtops that we want in the kitchen mean that we will need joins.... I know that good stone masons can polish and hide the joins, but how much will you see?

We are looking at a black with silver flecks artifical quartz and the slab size is 2400 x 720. Not a problem with the one run which is about 3500 so we will have the length joined under the centre of the hob so there will not be much join to see anyway. But the island bench will need a join on the length ( again we will do this under where the sink will be) - but it wall also require a join for the full length in order to have a 1000 deep island.

Will it show very much....?? anyone got any pictures....?? does black show the joins more than lighter colours???

You can not hide the joins in a quartz based bench top. They will always been seen. They dont look bad but you do see them.

maybe I don't undestand your post, but why is it that you need a joint the whole length because your island is 100cm wide?

Becasue the artifical quartz I am having is only 720mm wide...

Almost all quartz slabs are 1300mm or wider!! What brand are you having?

Smartstone actually has 1500mm wide slabs!

Umm ok, maybe you need to give us the full story?

So you are getting quartz stone from overseas that is 720mm wide and it still needs to be cut and joined??

yes as the island will be 1000mm deep and the slab is only 720 - so it needs to have a join. slab Length is 2400 . They will do the join for me - no problem, but I was just concerned about joins in general...and how much they show etc.

As the join will be lengthways I reckon it will look awful. Normally when you join a full width slab you put the join in a discrete location, but along the slab there will be no where to hide what so ever.

I agree it would look terriable. Why not just use a local stone mason and have no join at all?

If you have to have a join depth wise in a benchtop where is the discreet place for it..I am thinking...
if you have a run of 3500m and in the centre will be a hob...would you do the join in the centre of the hob plate - so it only shows at the front and behind where the hob sits - or would you run it level with one side of the hob?

same for a undermount sink in a run - where would you do the discreet join?

Yes join where the cooktop is. Most stone masons wont put a join anywhere near an undermount bowl!

and on the island where the bowl is - you suggest away from the sink - obviously as it is weaker where the sink is? so just a full join across the depth somewhere else on the island....

On the cooktop it could be either, depends on how large your kitchen is and where the joins need to go to allow for sheet sizes.

The join can go close to the sink but not through it.
