Walk in Pantry - help on layout

We are stuck on the placement of the WIP or whether to have one at all.

From the images attached you can see the layout. Island bench empty. Sink on the left with long window splashback to let in light. Cook top opposite island bench and WIP at entry of kitchen. The fridge has been placed where the study nook was and is seen on the right.

The laundry is behind the kitchen. We are trying to avoid having to enter the laundry through the garage which you would have to do with the current layout.

We could just have a wide pantry where the WIP doors are however we would be left with a huge laundry and no WIP.

Other option was to shift the garage forward 600mm and have a thinner WIP behind the cook top.

Any ideas?

I'm not articulately good at this but could you make the fridge recess/linen your walk in pantry, put the fridge where the WIP is now and have a door into the laundry on the wall facing bed 3. The linen that was in the hallway can become a built in n the laundry. Depending if the laundry is wide enough you could turn the garage wall side of the laundry into one long linen cupboard.

I would say what fmac and grumble have put forward is a good idea, I have had another thought but it may be a little way out. Let me see if I can draw what I am thinking

watching with interest, as we are trying to work ours into the plan also.
I want a BIG WIP, where ALL the kitchen cr&p is stored one end & actual food the other (long rectangle).

kitchen cr&p = slowcooker, bread maker, wok etc etc

Ok here it is, sorry about how blurry it is.

I have factored in moving the garage forward to give you extra room in the laundry. The laundry layout needs work but I didn't really know what your measurement are so wasn't sure what I was working with. So in my drawing you can either add the additional 600mm in the WIP or it can be cupboards in the garage.

I know you may find this layout different or not appropriate but it may help you to think of the space differently, I know seeing things in a totally different way helps me.

Pellana, I also thought of something like that but may have to put the sink in the island and the cooktop/oven on the side wall with a tall window each side.

Or you could extend the laundry wall out level with the garage to make your pantry a bit bigger.

This one includes moving the garage forward. In the pantry you would have the two bottom shelves 450 deep for appliances and large items and the shelves above 300 deep.

If all else fails you could move the media forward and put the laundry between it and bed 3 giving you one ginormous pantry!! Anyway Tysonut hope I have given you food for thought!

Champion effort grumblebum! I'll sit down and digest all of these tonight. Given me much more hope in a solution. I knew it was out there just hard to come up the ideas

It is such a stressful time when you’re building so the best advice I can offer is try to chill out if things go wrong, the SS will get it fixed, that’s what he’s there for.

Be thankful that you have the opportunity to build your own home as fewer people than ever are building at the moment, try to enjoy the experience.

I have been fortunate to build twice and if I had the $$$ I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I agree with the idea of having the laundry and pantry combined. Like this idea but without the interior wall.

The English often have the laundry as a component of another room (like the kitchen or a hall cupboard). By combining the laundry and pantry you create a really effective "butlers" style pantry - and if you choose a laundry trough that is a little less traditional like the Robinhood Supertub Workstation ST9001 you can create a space that could have some great functionality giving you potentially a nice open pantry and a big functional laundry in one. http://www.robinhood.co.nz/tubs (I bought one for my new house through Retravision)

Personally I like to maximise spaces and have combined a couple of spaces in our new house to make large functional multipurpose rooms rather than a mass of small specific ones, for example we combined the study and guest room to make a room that is 5m long and 3.6m wide. We will probably end up putting a murphy bed in there for guests leaving it to work as a huge study most of the time - this room also backs onto our ensuite and has a door into it so guests don't have to walk through the whole house to get to a bathroom (especially my elderly parents who really don't need to share with my teenagers when they visit). Downstairs we combined the laundry and a games/utility room to create a room that is 8.3m long and 4m wide. By combining the space we have been able to create a combined laundry and kitchenette downstairs with plenty of space for the self contained teenage retreat.

Take your time with getting your plan how you want it. We took about four months of fiddling with our floor plan before we finally got it to work in a way we wanted. Good luck!

In the UK they call it a utility room. If you combine both you could have a multipurpose sink. Laundry sink come second washing sink, would be more practical if you go for a washing machine that will go under the bench. But I would potentially put the washing machine closest to the external door and sink in the middle, kind of having the sink separate the laundry and pantry.

Again it depends how you live and what might work for you!

Pantry with 3 doors backing on to linen cupboard. Not sure about the setup of the doors for the pantry as its a wide dimension. Any thoughts?

Depends how wide the pantry is...

In the laundry you might want to consider a standard door (it could have glass window or window in the wall) rather then a glass sliding door. That way you have have your bench go all the way to the wall. If you have glass sliding door you have to have a gap between the glass window part of the door and he cabinets.

Just make sure you are going to have enough pantry space with what you have drawn there noting I am not sure of the measurements. I currently have a cupboard style floor to ceiling pantry that is 1500mm wide and I find it is not big enough. Admittedly we are a family of 5.

The other thing to consider is fashion particularly if you plan on selling the house in less than 10 years as the current trend is definitely towards butlers pantries if they can be accomodated - mind you not everyone likes them and I must admit I simplified mine so it wasn't the "singing and dancing" type that some places have and is really just a modified WIP, but by the time we leave our house in 30+ years fashion will be different again.

Have met the kitchen guy and we are closer than before on finalising the layout.

Right to left

Pantry 1m wide next to fridge both back onto linen

900mm wide oven tower with 2 drawers then oven then micro above, cupboards above that and around entire kitchen.

Island bench empty.

Cooktop with pull out rangehood and exhaust hidden with cupboards ( no handles)

Sink outlook to garden through wide window, single piece of glass unopening.

Dishwasher to right if sink opp island bench.

This will create a larger laundry behind kitchen.

Will have it added to the drafts next week, hopefully this is it.

Are you having a 900mm oven in a tower? Can’t say I have seen that before.

A couple of tips:

Make sure the bottom of your oven is below bench height so your microwave is not too high.

Have as many drawers as you can afford.
