Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 10, 2013 2:52 pm Hey all, im getting a new house built and im just looking at the technological aspect of it, iv brought the land and im just finalizing the housing plan etc, but sooner or later cabling and electrical is gonna come up and while im kinda tech savvy, im not sure I'm really up with whats out there anymore. Anyway the house will have FTTH. Main things I want to have hooked up to internet. Computer room: Gaming computer Living room: media computer/server Sometimes Xbox later possible smart TV. bedroom. PS3 possible smart TV computer pretty much solely for media. Family room: possible smart TV / console. then anything with a TV have coaxial...i think id be using coaxial still anyway. likely still have data and TVs hooked up to the other rooms, just because...i can. prettymuch in my current house I have the ADSL and cable lines come into my computer room to the routers, then from there i patch them back out the wall to each different rooms, if those rooms want to run multiple devices I put a switch on them...I this going to be the best way to still do it, just running 1 line from the NTU to a central hub or have the hub like in the garage or where the NTU is? I was thinking of running it to a bedroom as the central hub, but for resale value of the house, having 1 bedroom with a whole bunch of Ethernet plugs in the wall might not work for somebody else, so I may have to think of a new spot for that....i guess it would make the most sense to the hub where i want to have the media computer/ server? I know of system like cbus and possibly starserve where i think i can have multiple TV in different rooms hooked up to 1 device directly rather than having a different computer or whatever in every room, but im not sure those options are going to be in my budget. effectively im just wondering if this is the best way to still run a network and cable the house(wi-fi...just...no), i dont have a smart TV yet, but i figure you wont want to run another line specifically for them directly from the NTU. so any advice or input would be appreciated. Re: New home, need some cabling/network advice. 2Mar 10, 2013 7:56 pm Hi, There have been a few other threads on similar lines in the last few weeks, with more expert comments than I can offer. Though I don't think any so lucky as to have FTTH. Given that fact, I would suggest, though stand to be shot down, that Cat 6 or at least Cat 5e, be used. Most will advise against using the garage. Look for a central point, good for the dreaded WiFi ( comes in handy sometimes ) A central Gig Switch, presuming you only get 4 or so from the first device, can get enough points to your other rooms. If you have one or two rooms needing multiple outlets, I have put 8 port Gig Switches in those rooms, as you have done already. Most of the devices will work in this configuration, and you save on multiple cable and termination charges. The Switch pays for itself, just get a good one. ( see other posts ) Think there are less expensive options to Star Serve. I use a Kingray Amp, then a distributor. Just patch to required rooms, but may need attenuators to balance signal level. I got an antenna installer to setup and balance signal levels. Excellent even though he removed the Masthead amp. Know little of Smart TV, but given I have no issues with Apple TV on ADSL2+, with 4 other computers in the house, 2 of them streaming video from China at the same time as well, think you will be well and truly covered. Check those other threads for better info. Re: New home, need some cabling/network advice. 3Mar 10, 2013 10:01 pm Hrm yes there is some good threads, apologies for being that guy that just posts a thread without having much of a read around :/ might look at a NAS instead at a central point, something I always considered in the past, but never got around to implementing it...former gaming computers arnt exactly ideal for servers or media computer either, so much noise and so large :/ might look at extending the linen closet in the house drop two(or all) of the top shelves out maybe then install a fan up there and house all the junk in it. Re: New home, need some cabling/network advice. 4Mar 13, 2013 9:54 pm Don't bother with star serve... It's had it's day... And to be honest, you can get better/easier results with less money and mucking around... Cbus is a great system, but I've found that its also not all that great unless you go all out with it... Which of course is big bucks... Get yourself a decent NAS such as a QNAP or something like the HP mini server (plenty of threads on whirlpool from memory), and read off this using a ps3, media player, iPad, aple tv etc... If you want to stream simultaneous streams to different devices at the same time, you may need to beef up your server though... House all this in a central location, and terminate all your data to a rack mount 24 port patch panel... Some of the clipsal or cabac cabinets are good, and keep everything tidy... Mount it anywhere where is easy to get to but out of the way... Linen cupboard as you said is one, walk in robe etc... Garage is fine too... Trust me, I've seen setups worth thousands working perfectly fine for a long time in filthy warehouses and the like... Just some ideas, good luck with it! Some of the clipsal or cabac cabinets are good, and keep everything tidy... Xile - this is the most important part of anything you are thinking of doing, wanting to do or even preparing for things you aren't aware you will want Have ALL your cabling (Cat5/6, RG6) from the home terminate here then 2 Cat6 from the NTU location to this comms cupboard (if they are not in the same place) Another piece of advise - put more than you need. If you think you need 2, put 3. If you think you need 4, put a fifth. Below is a picture of the one I put into my place Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ What I have done is terminate all the cat6 and rg6 cabling into a rack (purposely made the space adequate for it (ventilation/accessibility to the rest of the house/accessibility to the outside of the house for external connections/etc.). This way I can store my NAS, security equipment, TV splitters, etc in the one locations. I have a media PC at each screen as I want to be able to manage this independently while from a single source, rather than stream from a single location - I can't validate the spend on the equipment to stream properly (HD + decent audio) when IMO, you are better to have a single source for the content and have the player locally within each of the rooms (depending on the extent of what you are trying to achieve) Hope this helps Re: New home, need some cabling/network advice. 6Mar 14, 2013 8:52 pm http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/Spe ... rk_Install < have a read of this wiki i wrote..
