Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 18, 2013 8:01 pm Hi all Hoping for some help, for a first time builder. today our frames went up and windows went in. Back at tender stage with our builder we changed our front three skinny windows to double hung. When we went to check the frame tonight we realised that the builder had out the wrong windows in and had out standard wind out windows. When we looked at the windows we thought they might be better because even though they look not as pretty and modern you can wind it half way whereas double hung need to be open or closed. However when we thought about it we don't think we could put fly screens on with the wind out as obviously you need the room to wind it out? Has anyone had any experience with wind out windows and fly screens or even double hung that can shed some light on what is better? Thanks in advance guys! We are having wind out on the front windows and they have the fly screen inside the house. Re: Window help- double hung or wind type 3Feb 19, 2013 2:05 am My wind outs also have fly screens on the inside. Just be weary when hanging blinds etc that you leave enough clearance space to be able to get the flyscreen out to clean it. Built with RedInk Custom 5000 Key Handover 15/12/2009 Re: Window help- double hung or wind type 4Feb 19, 2013 6:55 am I thought double-hung had more problems with flyscreens fitting than awning windows with winding mechanisms? Indeed, I thought the whole reason you usually had the winding mechanism fitted to awning windows (rather than operating them by hand) was so you could have fly screens (ie. without some awkward screen opening/closing mechanism)? Double-hung windows don't seal as well, and you can leave awning windows open when it's raining. As noted, I thought awning windows were better for having fly screens. Apart from price (they're cheaper aren't they?) I thought the only advantage double-hung windows had are that they can open a little further; most wind-out style awning windows can only open as far as the winder-mechanism allows, meaning there's still a bit of an obstruction to air coming-in; whereas a window which slides can get completely out-of-the-way. For me, though, I think I'd prefer the ability to crack the windows open when it's raining; so for me it'd be awning (with the winders to make the screens easier ). Re: Window help- double hung or wind type 5Feb 19, 2013 9:23 am For those of you with the wind out windows as I also have quite a few of these in my new house do the flyscreens on the inside look weird to you from the inside? I have just never seen it in real life. We opted not to put screens in yet as we were unsure about what we wanted. Re: Window help- double hung or wind type 6Feb 19, 2013 10:43 am Jack_n_Jill; I've got awning (wind out) windows at the front of my home and they have fly screens on the inside - no problems whatsoever. The only difference is my windows are full length whereas yours appear to be half fixed pane and half awning. It's a matter of individual choice really but I didn't like the look of a transom (the horizontal bit between the two panes of glass). The trade off was I had to have those stupid circle decals in case someone mistook my windows for a door TashnStu77; the flyscreen frame is only as big as the window frame and painted the same colour so you can't notice it looking from either the inside or outside. As for the screens themselves: are almost transparent from a distance and I certainly wouldn't say they look "weird". Hope that helps Re: Window help- double hung or wind type 7Feb 19, 2013 11:37 am Wow thanks for all the support guys, I do have a silly question though, If the flyscreen is on the inside how do you access the winder? Our winder is in the middle of the window as only the top half winds out. For us it makes no difference on cost it was something that we could choose either so we haven't paid for an upgrade or anything? From a diagram point of view (don't laugh too hard was the best i could think of-it looks like the below, where the "o" is the winding mechanism. _______________________________ | | | | | | _______________o_______________ | | | | | | _______________________________ Re: Window help- double hung or wind type 8Feb 19, 2013 11:57 am Nice diagram lol The flyscreen frame has a cut out in it which sits over the top of the winding mechanism (the metal bit from which the winding handle protrudes) - hard to explain but it works fine in effect Natural stone tiles like slate, travertine, and limestone add a timeless, elegant look to… 0 22518 2 1628 I am saying that double brick has similar thermal performance due to thermal mass effect.
