It's not ideal or strictly by the rule book,but provided the Cat 5 has been run properly (strictly to the rule book!), if you terminate all four wires in a Cat 5 cable, it will run at near Cat 6 Gigabit speeds (with a Gigabit switch), particularly on short runs (like inside a house). Ask a proper network cabler to do this for you down the track (especially when you get NBN). It's not as good as proper Cat 6, but you will definitely be far better off.
