This post shows you how to estimate the heat loss http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=3860 The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 7Feb 16, 2013 9:51 pm If only looking at what the code is, then unless you live in alpine region unlikely to require under slab insulation. However build with waffle pod slab and under slab insulation is taken care of. If a raft and beam slab then I would consider EPS foam under the slab at least 50mm. I would use XPS foam insulation on the edge of the slab as well at least 30mm. I have installed radiators and inslab hydronic heating, and strongly recommend in slab if possible over radiators. Cheaper and if going for polished concrete floors way more effective and cheaper to run. Good Luck Pulpo Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 8Feb 16, 2013 10:09 pm Sorry further read your posting. If the house is already built this is just a reno then highly recommend under slab insulation. 50mm of EPS (expanded polystyrene) then 50mm of an almost self leveling screed. This is almost standard in Europe for in slab heating. Good Luck Pulpo Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 9Feb 18, 2013 7:01 pm I have a conventional (not waffle pod) concrete slab and I'vput in edge insulation. It is 25 mm expanded polystyrene mounted vertically around the perimeter. I was aiming for 1 metre down, but it turned out to be more like 600 mm. In any case, it's the first 100 mm that are the most important, etc. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 11Feb 01, 2015 8:53 pm You can do the insulation after construction by installing insulation under the path around the house. This link shows a detail of how it can be done http://www.anewhouse.com.au/2013/01/slab-insulation/ The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 14Feb 09, 2019 2:17 pm Just wondering if anyone knows of resources to find the av. in-ground temperature for any region in Australia? Trying to work out whether it's worth insulating the slab in SE QLD for a zero energy house. Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 15Feb 09, 2019 2:43 pm Here's some Queensland data. Them termites really enjoy some of the slab edge insulation materials. WOOPS! link fixed... http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ60604.shtml Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 16Feb 10, 2019 9:08 pm supa007 Just wondering if anyone knows of resources to find the av. in-ground temperature for any region in Australia? Trying to work out whether it's worth insulating the slab in SE QLD for a zero energy house. I'd expect that in SE QLD you'd be a good candidate for a ground coupled slab. As the ground will be cooler in summer than the air temperature, & warmer in winter. Yeah, further north in QLD the ground temperature would be too hot, so a ground coupled slab would be detrimental. But I wouldn't expect this to be the case further south. So yeah, determine your ground temperature, before you consider adding insulation to your slab. Unless of course you have underfloor heating (unlikely), in which case insulation would be necessary. Good you're thinking of this stuff, most people don't. Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 18Feb 17, 2019 4:58 pm supa007 Our ground temp at 1m depth currently is about 29 degrees... Still higher than the indoor ideal of 24 degrees. So, I think I might just insulate my slab all around. What is it like at night? Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 19Feb 17, 2019 5:03 pm Waiting for BOM climate data services to send me their archived data. But I don’t think they have data collection point at night... But at 1m depth, it shouldn’t have much in terms of diurnal variation. Re: Slab Insulation - Edge vs Under slab 20Feb 17, 2019 5:32 pm Your slab will be almost on the ground, not at 1 m depth, on the other side. If you get some diurnal variation at the top soil level, you should be good without insulation due to the flywheel effect. Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16325 4 5156 |
