Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 26, 2008 7:46 pm Hello,
Need some help here. Just bought an apt and needed some renovation work. Has anyone used Cronulla Carpet to do their carpet? Are they reliable as they say? Is it common for suppliers to ask for 50% deposit in order to place your order??? What other things do you need to insist when they give you the quotation? Is it enough for them to put down the carpet name, color and blue underlay? Is blue underlay the same as Supa blue underlay?? Re Energy Saving downlights, how many do you need for a 6m by 6m room? I saw a web site guide that says I would prob need 16-18. An electrician came and suggested 9 may be enough. Can anyone speak from experience? Anyone used Beacon Lighting or KES? Many thanks in advance!!! Re: Carpet and Energy Saving Downlights 2Aug 27, 2008 8:20 am re cfls
I found they are being really oversold and 16-18 would be blinding! I was eventually told 1.5 cfl to one halogen but I find they are almost but not quite 1.1 so for me somewhere between that I personally dont like heaps of light though maybe 1.5 is ok if you do hmm two 11w in a bedroom is quite dim though for example though its tricky!...and I dont think many of the shop assistants have any real experience with them! hopefully more people can answer from their experience it also depends on the globes and strengh of course Re: Carpet and Energy Saving Downlights 4Aug 27, 2008 8:35 am It's 11W globes. Another electrician suggested 9 which I'm not sure if it'll be too dim, given it's energy saving lights.
Have you heard of Beacon Lighting Installation? I know the lighting store is quite "known" in the forum space but not sure about their installation dept. They didn't hv to visit the place for a quote. Thanks. Re: Carpet and Energy Saving Downlights 5Aug 27, 2008 8:40 am I would have though that the guidelines for CFL downlight spacing would be the same as for halogen ones. I would just ensure that the CFL had the same light output as the 50 W halogen (which I think would be an 11W CFL).
Once you've got the same light output, then the same guidelines can be applied. That is, 1 m from the ends of the room and 2 m apart. So a 6 x 4 m room would have 6 downlights. Do we need more CFL’s to replace our halogens? For general lighting it should be fine to do a one for one swap of the lights. However, if you have dark floors, walls or prefer intense bright light, then you will want more light. In these cases and for specific task lighting, you can substitute 240 volt halogens in where they are needed (we can supply these at $3 each). If it is a retro-fit and they don’t want more holes in the roof then suggest a track system. Usually suggest an extra CFL for every 3-4 halogens. I would only be putting in 9 downlights in a 6 x 6 m room. If you want more light output, don;t put more lights in - increase the CFL wattage. I've noticed you can get 12 W CFLs (Nelson 12W GU10 CFL). Also, make sure you get 240 V lights as any transformers will chew up power.
