Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Colorbond Roofs vs Concrete Roof Tiles (Melbourne West) 11Jan 30, 2013 8:53 am Had a coincidental chat to my daughter this morning who was telling me that a girl in her new pastoral care room at school had tarps on her roof due to some of the tiles being damaged during the wild weather here. However just to be fair I am sure there were cbs as well, just heard her say that randomly this morning and thought of this thread. Re: Colorbond Roofs vs Concrete Roof Tiles (Melbourne West) 12Jan 30, 2013 8:56 am Hi FND, After much talking to my brother, i'm now back to square zero and leaning towards having concrete roof tile... Sorry for being so indecisive. Reasons are: - I'm living with my brother who built with Henley and has tile roof. So far, I survive the summer living under tile roof without cooling - I honestly like the looks of tile roof better - After some more research, colorbond will give you cooler summer at night because heat from afternoon sum will dissipate out of the roof space quickly as soon as the sun sets. (this means if the outside temperature is hot at night, it will still be hot as heat in roof space cant dissipate out) - Stainless steel has very high heat conductivity compared to concrete (approx. 16 times). SO during daylight, it can be very hot under a colorbond roof. - Colorbond roof dissipate heat quickly, so you will need more heating during winter because heat will dissipate out from the house quicker if you use colorbond - Colorbond sun radiation reflectance is higher for light color roof. I like darker roof better but it wont be much help in reflecting sunlight. So if you want to go colorbond, think of choosing the lighter color. (I guess, this point wins tile roof for me) I know that there might be some added insulation if we use colorbond which counter all the points above. So it all goes back to your choice. Re: Colorbond Roofs vs Concrete Roof Tiles (Melbourne West) 13Jan 30, 2013 9:01 am Oh and yes, I just checked floorplan for Monaco Q1, it's slightly smaller than Monaco Nouveau because there is no alfresco in Monaco Q1. I think of the horizon facade. I like the large portico in the horizon facade. I've already asked the drafting in Henley, they cant do it because it's about 62:38... But I will try asking during my color appointment again. Re: Colorbond Roofs vs Concrete Roof Tiles (Melbourne West) 14Jan 30, 2013 8:26 pm Thanks everyone for your responses and input. I think at this point, we are leaning more towards colorbond (monument color), considering that it is a free upgrade for us now and its got more advantages to concrete rooftiles. So I guess I will be sacrificing the look that I prefer, in order to get that peace of mind that comes with colorbond roofing (less chance of water leakages). Can everyone please tell their experiences on fading? which one will fade faster? colorbond or concrete rooftile? 1rocky - do you have any pic of the monument colorbond roof? we are thinking of going monument too. Thanks! Maybe this is a sign that I should go with colorbond! Re: Colorbond Roofs vs Concrete Roof Tiles (Melbourne West) 16Jan 30, 2013 9:07 pm Hey there I have heard that colourbond doesn't fade as quickly as tiles do, but in this house building arena where they will say anything to squeeze extra money out of you, you have to take what they say with a grain of salt :/ I too am looking at what I think is the same builder you're going with, as they are having a colourbond roof promo. I suggest you look in to getting sarking installed with it, which will help reflect heat, and if you live where it's mostly hot, stick with a lighter colored roof I live in a townhouse that is tiled and the roof leaks I've had have been a nightmare. That being said, the independent builder who built this house did a spectacularly terrible job. They are melbourne based, if anyone wants to know who they are to avoid them just pm me.
