But we have a family of them that lives out the back, and every now and then we see them carry off a snake. Can't say I've ever seen any around the yard. I saw a couple of kookaburras at the property but I think the building process will probably scare them away. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 13Jan 22, 2013 8:00 am That's okay, just leave some mince-meat out once the construction is over on some kind of elevated post to present to them - if you have a decking, one of the posts is a good place. Or a bird bath in the center of the lawn. They don't like dogs or cats though, so if you have them, only do so when the pets aren't out - they have been known to even attack pets, though we've never had a problem. Just get them in the habit of knowing there's food occasionally available and they'll learn to start wanting to come by. They'll want to have a really high tree nearby to sit in though. If you're in the middle of streets with no very large trees, it might be difficult. Fortunately for me the council (idiots) saw it fit to plant Eucalyptus trees in front of every second house - that'll be interesting in 10 or 15 years time Building a Delta 21 at Craigieburn - http://homeofzero.blogspot.com.au/ Deposit: 26/02. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 14Jan 22, 2013 9:45 am We have some large trees in our back yard area but sadly the beautiful large trees across on one block that were the favourite sitting place of our local kookas have been removed. I think they've taken to the trees in our yard instead but not as much. I'll have to encourage them more. We usually have kookas sitting on our front fence posts at least once a day. I'll have to make a point of leaving some mince out for them. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 15Jan 22, 2013 10:36 am A mate of mine had Guinea Fowls quite a few years ago. They are a bit territorial but great foragers. They will kill small snakes but also lizards too and there are not many things that will trouble them. They can be problematic if you run them with chickens as they like to harass the chooks and won't back down in a scrap with a rooster even if it is twice their size. They will even have a go at a cat or dog if there are a few of them. Stewie Re: Snake Deterrents ? 16Jan 22, 2013 10:58 am Ah well, it looks like I'm going to have a lot of trouble then. I have two cats and a dog. So the kookaburras might attack them, and so would the guinea fowls. And the snakes probably. This is not looking good. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 17Jan 22, 2013 12:01 pm The cats and dogs soon learn who's boss! They're also great "watch birds". No one will visit without them letting you know someone is in "their" territory. Ours were pretty good with the chooks, they all the same coop at night and got on well. I wouldn't think they would be good for a small area, as they can fly, but who knows. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 20Jan 22, 2013 3:52 pm Just search for "Guinea fowl for sale" and it comes up with quite a few sellers. You're bound to find one near you.
