Anyone got them ?
Any recommendations ?
Solar or battery ?
Is sandy soil an issue - has anyone tried them in sandy soil ?

My building thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53000 Re: Snake Deterrents ? 3Jan 18, 2013 1:41 pm Thanks Barker. I take it there are others - not just "pulse" ? I remember once some time ago someone said oil was a good deterrent. An old place of mine had a few biggish lizards - and we never saw a snake. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 5Jan 18, 2013 8:08 pm We have the occasional Dugite wonder through and a few Diamond Pythons. The DPs are fine as they clean up any bush mice, rats etc... We strategically place Black bird netting loosely on the ground and this traps snakes those we don't like are removed to the reptile park and the ones we do like are released As yet not caught any lizards or other animals, marsupials and seems not harm unless intended. Once while inspecting for the first time a Dugite was inches away from my face and I didn't see it until it hissed at me. Now I approach with caution if something is caught. Seems to work for us, low cost, no moving parts and did I say CHEAP at $1.50 mtr that stretches a few metres wide and just lays on the ground for a few months of the year. We live on a big bush block(3.3H) with national park behind us Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Snake Deterrents ? 6Jan 19, 2013 10:17 am We afraid I must disagree with the above comment on the pulse emitters. We believe they do work, we have minor snakes like tiger and browns around our area. We used them in the last house and saw snakes that would not go past the emitters. Other hoses near us that didn't have them had snakes, we didn't have a snake in the yard from when we installed them. Others I know have had similar experiences. As for $199. There the expensive ones. We bought a six pack off eBay that d the same job for about $50. Solar powered, with an LED light. Can't go wrong really. Had the dearer ones once until they got flooded out. After pulling them apart they are exactly the same as the cheaper ones. If you have the room and no close neighbours the best snake deterrent is a guinea fowl. 2 of them will keep a house area clear without any problems. They tend to be a bit unsociable to other animal types. Yeah, definitely not minor snakes when it comes to venomous that's for sure. I think he means juvenile. Stewie Re: Snake Deterrents ? 9Jan 21, 2013 3:33 pm Juveniles, Na, not really unless 6 footers are still just kids! 2 properties ago the 12 guage was the answer against 2 browns. One was bigger than 6 ft. The last place didn't have any browns just tigers!! Bit smaller, but we had the repellers and none came into the backyard at all. Tigers get a bit angrier. My son was going for a run and annoyed a female tiger, (must have been nesting) it chased him for 200metres. Reckons he's never ran so fast. I say 'pet' loosely, because you cant keep them as pets. But we have a family of them that lives out the back, and every now and then we see them carry off a snake. Can't say I've ever seen any around the yard. Building a Delta 21 at Craigieburn - http://homeofzero.blogspot.com.au/ Deposit: 26/02. Contract: 22/05. Settlement: 29/05. Site start: 18/10. I don't suppose you can get em at the local pet shop, those guinea fowls? What do you mean they're unsociable, what do they do to other animals? I saw a couple of kookaburras at the property but I think the building process will probably scare them away. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 13Jan 22, 2013 8:00 am That's okay, just leave some mince-meat out once the construction is over on some kind of elevated post to present to them - if you have a decking, one of the posts is a good place. Or a bird bath in the center of the lawn. They don't like dogs or cats though, so if you have them, only do so when the pets aren't out - they have been known to even attack pets, though we've never had a problem. Just get them in the habit of knowing there's food occasionally available and they'll learn to start wanting to come by. They'll want to have a really high tree nearby to sit in though. If you're in the middle of streets with no very large trees, it might be difficult. Fortunately for me the council (idiots) saw it fit to plant Eucalyptus trees in front of every second house - that'll be interesting in 10 or 15 years time Building a Delta 21 at Craigieburn - http://homeofzero.blogspot.com.au/ Deposit: 26/02. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 14Jan 22, 2013 9:45 am We have some large trees in our back yard area but sadly the beautiful large trees across on one block that were the favourite sitting place of our local kookas have been removed. I think they've taken to the trees in our yard instead but not as much. I'll have to encourage them more. We usually have kookas sitting on our front fence posts at least once a day. I'll have to make a point of leaving some mince out for them. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 15Jan 22, 2013 10:36 am A mate of mine had Guinea Fowls quite a few years ago. They are a bit territorial but great foragers. They will kill small snakes but also lizards too and there are not many things that will trouble them. They can be problematic if you run them with chickens as they like to harass the chooks and won't back down in a scrap with a rooster even if it is twice their size. They will even have a go at a cat or dog if there are a few of them. Stewie Re: Snake Deterrents ? 16Jan 22, 2013 10:58 am Ah well, it looks like I'm going to have a lot of trouble then. I have two cats and a dog. So the kookaburras might attack them, and so would the guinea fowls. And the snakes probably. This is not looking good. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 17Jan 22, 2013 12:01 pm The cats and dogs soon learn who's boss! They're also great "watch birds". No one will visit without them letting you know someone is in "their" territory. Ours were pretty good with the chooks, they all the same coop at night and got on well. I wouldn't think they would be good for a small area, as they can fly, but who knows. Re: Snake Deterrents ? 20Jan 22, 2013 3:52 pm Just search for "Guinea fowl for sale" and it comes up with quite a few sellers. You're bound to find one near you.
