I've seen some in pictures that look good though - sort of hanging quite low over the island bench. Re: Lighting over kitchen island 8Jan 16, 2013 9:58 am Mike hanging lights and fans can definitely be an issue for tall people in "trafficable" areas such as hallways. But in the case of non trafficable positions such as over a bench or dining table you can go quite low with no problems, since the table itself prevents people walking into the light. I've seen large chandeliers mounted as low as 70cm above a dining table. It can provide quite a dramatic effect. For worktops you'd want higher though, as you are standing rather than sitting. I believe a metre above the bench is common.
