Ceiling batts are for ceilings. Wall batts come in different thicknesses and R-values. Ideally any R-value 2 and over is best. The depth of your timber or steel frame studs will determine which you can use. Installing wall batts during a build is easy but installing after plasterboard has been installed is most difficult, messy and costly. Re: Insulation batts in walls? 3Jan 01, 2013 12:23 pm Ok thanks. I wasn't sure if there were specific wall batts or whether batts could have multiple uses. I'm going to buy some and install them along the west facing walls during the build phase. We wrapped the whole house but I know of others that have just done the western walls due to budget. I'm curious why there won't be insulation in all exterior walls. Is it double brick? In NSW, all external walls are insulated because the house construction is usually brick veneer. Re: Insulation batts in walls? 5Jan 01, 2013 10:44 pm Hi Vess. Our walls will be insulated by that foil stuff as standard by our builder. We wanted to add additional batts in the west facing walls (bedrooms). My brother did this with his place years ago and his rooms are much cooler in summer. He couldn't remember which batts he used so I thought I'd ask here For the cost I think it would be worth it. I figure we can't have too much insulation Custom downslope build Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61873 Blog http://www.buildingroyalmanor.blogspot.com.au Re: Insulation batts in walls? 7Jan 04, 2013 12:36 pm I thought that all new builds in Victoria had wall batts plus sisilation these days? If you are lucky he will allow it (I would not). Melbourne has some pretty cold winters. Stewie Cold doesn't bother us, it's the heat we are wanting to keep out. Especially the bedrooms. The other rooms will be fine as they face south and east. Deemaree I thought that all new builds in Victoria had wall batts plus sisilation these days? I don't think so. I think it's more to do with the R rating and ensuring the 5 (or is it 6 now?) star energy rating. I could be wrong though. building-expert Just make sure you have your builder's permission to come on site and do the insulation. If you are lucky he will allow it (I would not). Our builder is pretty laid back. Said we can essentially do what we want during the build providing he knows what is going on. My brother did this with his build (prob 6 or 7 years ago now) and the difference is outstanding definitely worth doing - for us anyway. Resale is better for a well insulated home too-most buyers these days are au fait with the added heating costs of a poorly insulated home-even if you don't plan to sell in the short term. Because its such a small area, you might want to consider a high density acoustic wall batt no more than 90mm thick, to maximise Total system R value Found the answer. The recommended distance is .... 1 4610 I am saying that double brick has similar thermal performance due to thermal mass effect.
