Firstly THANK YOU to all of the contributors. This list really is an invaluable read for N00bs like me I've been avidly reading this forum since I randomly signed up to build with Homestart not even 2 months ago. I literally woke up once one Sunday and decided it was time to buy a place of my own. 2.5 weeks later (and after a false start with Aussie Living), with no experience or knowledge whatsoever, I realised I had to come up with a colour scheme that wouldn't look like a bland slate or a pizza AND make sure I didn't fall into one of the many traps of building a new home. This list of 'things you forget' has been like a bible for me! Having said that, I found that with the excitement and terror of prestart I felt very rushed to make all of the decisions so my word of advice is.. PRINT THE LIST before you go in! One thing I'd like to add is your front security door... it not only doesn't come with the home, but unless you get a double doorframe thingo at prestart it will be difficult to add one later. Being on a budget I went for the doorframe upgrade ($30) as opposed to the security screen ($1,000) Thank you all very much, I hope to create my own post on here with my selections and progress in the near future.. would love to get others insights and feedback on my selections ps I'm building in Caversham WA, not the new estate, but in a subdivided section of the area that's been established for ~ 5 years, so if anyone is building either in that area or in Perth with Homestart I'd love to hear from you !! Where do you want them to be ? That's actually not always possible... learnt from personal experience. On the plan our activity room window was right in the middle, but draftsmen screwed up apparently and miscalculated the bricks. Brickies went ahead and did what they thought was right i.e. not cutting the brick in half and now we have a window 10cm to the side instead of being in the middle... but we checked our plans thoroughly... mistake came up during the build after the brickwork was finished... Depends what you're current inclusions are, but we're not including wardrobes and will just use second hand ones until we can save later on to get them built.
