Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 05, 2012 12:28 pm Need some advice! We already have frames up and just realised our hallway from the garage into the house is weirdly wide. It's been on our plans from the beginning but we never picked up on it til we were walking through the frames! We've got two options: 1. Leave it as is, and I can put my new buffet on the wall opposite the linen cupboard. And maybe my little feature chair. I kind of like this idea but my mum doesn't! And 2. Bring the linen cupboard out and turn it to a walk-in cupboard. Mum prefers this idea 'because at her age she would walk in and think, what a waste of space'. I suppose I thought it would be cool to have a little area there. Won't get used, but I need somewhere to put my buffet and I thought it would look good there! This is a copy of our plan, you can see the space I'm talking about opposite bedroom 2: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thoughts? 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 2Dec 05, 2012 12:52 pm What about a "study nook" - so where you wanted to put your buffet put a small desk and chair. Handy spot for it as it's near the kitchen for when/if you need to use a computer and you're cooking dinner or something - or keep an eye on children if they are on the internet (not sure if you have kids Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 3Dec 05, 2012 12:54 pm Hey Stella I cant tell from the drawing but whats next to the linen cupboard?? I like the idea of turning the linen cupboard into a walk in but as long as it will go all the way to the wall of the garage other wise it will look weird.. From the plan it looks like the internal access door is close to bed 3 which means putting something against bed 3 wall may block off the entrance.. if you will want to put something against that wall (instead of WIL) then see if you can move the door so you have clear access from the door.. That was also suggested to us but we really have no use for it, we both have laptops (no desktop computers at all) and we don't have kids...one of the bedrooms has already been allocated as a 'study', really only for filing purposes though! Thanks so much for the suggestion though! Boosho, next to the linen cupboard is just a broom closet. Still opens through the same door, but just an area in the cupboard without shelving And if we had the walk in we would just put brooms/mops/vacuum etc in there anyway. 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 5Dec 05, 2012 12:59 pm Well in that case i think WIL is a good use of space and even if you dont shelf the whole room it can be part linen part storage room.. you can never have too much storage.. All areas of the house don't necessarily have to be "useful", you can just use it to put something decorative. WE don't need the extra storage space, so my preference would just be leaving it and putting the chair and buffet, but I'm just thinking for resale in 3-5 years....sigh sigh sigh. We don't have to decide until after Christmas so at least we have a month to thinka bout it... 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 8Dec 05, 2012 3:33 pm Stella you lucky thing I know exactly what I would do...a mini mudroom, it would be perfect! Have a look at Houzz for mudrooms, it's kinda like your buffet idea. I prefer to have as many walls and nooks in my house to put furniture so I would do the buffet idea and after coming into the house from the garage you have somewhere lovely to greet you with maybe a mirror and fresh flowers and a little tray to pop your keys in. I love a cranny in a house that's not designated to anything just your imagination. Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 9Dec 05, 2012 5:15 pm Mini mud room.... for sure! I already own these, so there is no changing them haha. I don't have actual pictures because they are in storage, so these are off the website. I've never actually seen the buffet properly because we bought it after we moved out, so it went straight into storage. Mine is the same style, but it's a darker wood (I got the last one before that colour was discontinued!), and the chair is exactly the same: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'm also pretty sure my buffet only has the top drawers and is open down the bottom, but I've only seen it side on so I can't be certain haha. So that's what will be in the space if it's not a WIL! 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 11Dec 05, 2012 8:21 pm Squeee, love the chair!!!! Where did you get it from? The buffet is gorgeous too! I definitely think you should dedicate this space in your house for them! I don't like the colour of the buffet in the photo so I keep reminding myself mine is different haha! They are both from Far Pavilions. I also have the matching dining table and coffee table. And the dining chairs I want are from there too. They have a lot of Asian style stuff there that I don't like but the stuff I have got from there, I love! To be honest the easiest solution (if you'd picked up on it in time) would have been to make bed 3 a little deeper so that the wall pushes out into the hallway a bit more, but it's obviously too late for that if your frame is already up. Another suggestion might be some sort of bookcase-style arrangement with some books / photos / knick knacks in it to draw the eyes away from the size of the passage itself - not sure how that would work stashed away in the back passage to the garage though. Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 15Dec 06, 2012 1:17 am I think a buffet and chair there will obstruct flow. But then I guess the hall is wide enough that nothing can make it feel obstructed. I love the idea of the mini mud room, that is so so useful, you can put shoes, balls, beach gear, pet stuff. Now I'm wishing I had a space like that! Oh well. So on your drawings...how do we get into the hidey hole? It's just part of the linen cupboard that's less accessible than the rest? I know the smart thing to do would be extend the closet to a mini-mud room...but I just really like the buffet and chair idea lol, and I don't have another little area in the house I could put them together. We've done the same thing with a robe in one of our bedrooms (it consumed a useless void that was there but left the doors the same width) and it's the perfect place to stash empty suitcases. Another option could be to have the extra space taken up by the broom cupboard instead and have a semi-walk in style arrangement kind of like a walk-in pantry for it. Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 19May 02, 2013 6:46 pm If you asked me, a walk-in cupboard is much better, so this time, Iām sorry I would have to side your mum on this. You can do more with a walk-in cupboard then a feature chair and buffet as you have effectively increased space in your house. Why? Well, with the cupboard, you can store many items that you most commonly use in the house, things like the vacuum cleaner and a ladder, both of which would otherwise be at your garage. You can also put in your off season clothes that are taking up space in your room. It may seem a little but all these free up spaces all over the house; extra space that you can use for other more important stuff. Re: What to do with large hallway space...extra storage or.. 20May 02, 2013 9:48 pm I like the idea of putting the buffet there - you don't want to end up going to cramped by putting extra walls in IMO.
