Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Nov 11, 2012 2:33 am I am planning a DIY on a significant slope, average 13 degree (24%), forms some 30x2.6 meters driveway. The road base is quite solid covered by chipped white rocks(~2cm), but with rutting by years of daily drive. I am thinking to fill the rutting only with some base material (needs compact?), then go bedding sand and interlocking pavers, then compact. Is it sounds all right, or too steep to pave? Or I need to do a good road base first? Is it OK to collect storm-water at the bottom, or a grate channel and pipe in both the middle and bottom? Re: driveway paving on slope, needs advices 2Nov 11, 2012 5:40 am Very good, even, compaction is the key to any paving job. at the moment the tyres have probably compacted the bottom of the ruts while the area between the ruts has hardly been compacted at all. Its probably OK to fill the ruts with base material as long as you compact it as you go (100mm layers) and make sure the rest of the surface is compacted. You should cast the bottom drainage in a 'header beam' see (http://www.masonrymagazine.com/4-07/pavers.html) There are a lot of problems in putting drainage halfway down a paving slope so I would avoid that if it was me. Re: driveway paving on slope, needs advices 3Nov 11, 2012 4:07 pm Header beam. Emm, I need to have a look. Good point. The area between ruts is quite hard as my observation, I am not sure if the previous owner had done any compaction. It is like very dense 1 cm chips with dirty in between at this time, I do need SDS chisel to dig. The most noticeable runts are on steepest 24 percent section, where my car looses traction in dry days and strip a bit, leaving floating chips and dirt. On gentle slope there is barely ruts. paver + sand + base = 75 + 50 + 100, that is 225mm I need to dig. I am not sure how much does it cost to hire someone with excavator, it is 80 m2 slope + 50 m2 flat area at the bottom of slope. I noticed base compaction needs to be done in a few coats, is it OK for I just do another thin coat, then I can save some dig and base work. Re: driveway paving on slope, needs advices 4Nov 12, 2012 11:07 am It should be less than $100/hour for a backhoe excavator. If you are sure that the existing base is pretty good just do some passes with a compactor and then build up from that in 100mm layers. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: driveway paving on slope, needs advices 5Nov 16, 2012 12:08 am I got a few quotes, decided to go for digging then a proper base work as your adviced. One more question, for the header beam which needs 30MPa strength concrete. Do you know where to get small amount in Adelaide? My calculation shows it should be roughly 0.12 m3. All pre-mixed concrete from bunnings are 20MPa at most (OK for footpath), may be OK for curbs.
