Or are they pretty much the same? I prefer awning windows (for the look and also I can have them open if it's raining) but hubby says sliding windows let more of the breeze in if you're trying to air the house out after a hot day etc. If there is a breeze, then both windows, sliding and awning, given the same opening size, are equally effective. The ventilation is caused by pressure differences as a result of the breeze, and the position of the openings is irrelevant, just like a draught, where you can feel the cold, but you can't see the gap under the door. Or are they pretty much the same? Ed Bonus of awnings is that you can open them a bit when it's raining and the water doesn't get in. Our house doesn't have eaves (I wanted them but wasn't able to) so that allows us to get ventilation on hot rainy days. Re: awning windows vs sliding windows? 8Nov 15, 2012 4:15 pm DazzaB My main bedroom the the front of the house has awning windows with a flyscreen. The windows are only narrow so if they were sliding they wouldn't open very much. http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g372/Dazzab6/Bricks/2011-12-16172634.jpg which part of window can be open? up or down? my builder show me the awning windows. It has more than 70% fixed on top. I can only open 30% at bottom. So I guess it is not good for airflow. Re: awning windows vs sliding windows? 9Nov 15, 2012 6:21 pm Thanks for the replies Talking with hubby we will definitely have awnings at the front and to some of the rooms and sliders for the others eg. our highlite window in the master and ensuite will be awning (so I can leave them a little open for ventilation in rainy weather if I wanted to) and the other window in the master bedroom (large one that faces the view) will be a slider. I am also of the opinion that awning and sliders provide the same ventilation but I don't think I'll win the 'awnings for the entire house' battle. You can't sensible have a 2100 x 850 sliding window as the sash will tip as you move it.
