What did you do yourself and what did you get tradesmen to do? Re plants: Aumanns on Plenty Rd have good quality plants, but stock varies. They may be able to order in whatever you want if they don't have it though. The big green shed (you know who I mean) is sometimes cheap, but plants tend to be pot-bound (especially the larger ones) and not well looked after. Sertel's at Doreen offer good prices, but again, you need to choose carefully as some plants have been in their pots a long time. I've not had any problems with the ones I've bought there, but I always check that the roots aren't coming out the bottom of the pot and that the plant looks healthy. Re: Build Thread - Modern Formal Garden on a Budget 24Nov 09, 2012 1:36 pm very nice how thick are you going on the concrete below the paving? thinking of doing something similar Re: Build Thread - Modern Formal Garden on a Budget 25Nov 09, 2012 3:16 pm Thanks for the kind words everyone. kek Re plants: Aumanns on Plenty Rd have good quality plants, but stock varies... maximus Hmmm - very interested - what kind of budget? XT4V very nice how thick are you going on the concrete below the paving? thinking of doing something similar Re: Build Thread - Modern Formal Garden on a Budget 26Nov 09, 2012 3:24 pm syahrr01 We had 100mm of reinforced concrete under every paver, including stepping stones. Underneath the concrete is around 75mm of compacted roadbase. Some say we're over doing it. I wouldnt say overdoing it, more of a guarantee it will last Re: Build Thread - Modern Formal Garden on a Budget 27Nov 09, 2012 6:12 pm syahrr01 maximus Hmmm - very interested - what kind of budget? What did you do yourself and what did you get tradesmen to do? Unfortunately we had to rely on tradies for almost all the hard landscaping elements. I only did very minor things such as waterproofing membrane, varnishing timber surfaces and sealing the granite pavers. From this point onwards, we're looking to do everything ourselves. Our overall landscaping budget is around 10% of the total value of the property. Thanks! Gives me some idea of what might be possible. I'm thinking of factoring some landscaping construction into the build as it's probably cheaper/easier that way (although that will depend on the builder I select). Maybe a rendered concrete-block wall for a future vertical garden and low water wall. Stepping stones, for example, are 1000x250mm. These were cut to specified dimensions to minimise waste and installation efforts. Cost-wise the standard 20mm ones are roughly $52 per sq m. The 30mm bullnose are much dearer. Re: Build Thread - Modern Formal Garden on a Budget 32Nov 26, 2018 7:52 am A bit of thread necro, but I thought it would be fun to show before and after. 6 years after that is. I would call this the completion of our last stage of landscaping - planting. Images are on the same order as the first post.
