Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 24, 2012 7:53 am Hello all! We’re currently renovating our old house and will shortly be taking out the old-school box air conditioners that are mounted in the walls. Can someone recommend what kind of air con we should get to replace them? I honestly have NO idea about them. Obviously there’s no ducting or anything in the house, and the problem is that its very open – you can see from my (shabby, Excel, not to scale) pic that its very open through the living/kitchen areas, and also there’s a flight of stairs going down from the middle which is entirely open. Downstairs is just a laundry and rumpas (junk) room so it doesn’t need to be cooled, but its impossible to stop the flow of air down there. The top storey of the house gets scorching in summer – I’m talking 40+ - but downstairs is always cool. We’re planning on selling as soon as the house is done (mid next year) so don’t want the most expensive top of the line equipment ever, but just something that does the job. For upstairs I would recommend either a split system or refridgerated aircon as an evap unit would be pretty much useless. A bank is a place that will lend you money only if you can prove that you don't need it... Re: Air con for old house? 4Nov 21, 2012 4:27 pm I had this problem 13 years ago when I was looking to cool my A-Frame (Read heat trap) two level open plan house. I have few if any walls closing off areas including only lattice walls on the two upstairs rooms. It's basically one gigantic 2-level studio/warehouse. I ended up going with two split systems an 11kw at one end and a 5 kw at the other end. On 40+°C days both run simultaneously. I can turn off whichever one I need as the temperature fluctuates. Bear in mind when you are getting quotes that they base their cooling on a 32-35°C day which personally I believe in Australia just doesn't cut it. I specified that on a 42°C day I wanted to have goosebumps (A lot said they couldn't do it so they didn't get the job). I always asked whic brand other than yours would you recommend. It was always them and Daikin (expensive but good). When the Daikin guy said us and Mitsubishi I went with Mitsubishi and haven't regretted it. It's difficult to see via your plans how open it is. It actually looks quite closed off (lots of isolated bedrooms) You could possibly have one large system in the dining room blowing across into the lounge room. But to do the whole upstairs you'll need additional aircons in each closed off bedroom which indicates to me that perhaps a zoned ducted system would be more practical. There's not much you can do about the stairs unless you build up a shroud around it and put a doorway on it which is costly and not aesthetically pleasing. (Note there are split system units now that have one condenser unit outside that can feed multiple rooms, just ensure it can adequately handle it) Re: Air con for old house? 5Nov 21, 2012 5:14 pm Yep the three bedrooms up top are closed off, but then its open through the two living areas/kitchen/stairwell and all of downstairs. So all the awesome hot air rises up and just sits there lol. Thanks for the info! - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. Our thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67954 How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5898 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
