Our house is a new build too but the builder could not leave the skirting off so we are having them installed and then taking it off...hopefully it won't be too difficult. Re: Buying flooring online- please help 17Aug 23, 2012 11:18 pm Mark S Tell the builder to just tack the skirtings on. Hi Mark S, Thanks for your comment. I read about tacking (somewhere on this forum) and asked my builder, but he said there is no such thing as "tacking" and that he can only install it as normal, or give them to me raw...which means I have to cut it and paint it, which will take me forever (as a total beginner at DIY)... So I opted to have them fully installed and I am going to try and take them off without destroying the walls/paint. If you know a lot about tacking, could you explain to me what it actually is? Is it different from nailing it in? Can any builder tack on the skirting without extra cost? Sorry to ask so much... Re: Buying flooring online- please help 18Aug 24, 2012 11:03 am He just needs to cut the skirts to fit, but not fully nail them to the wall. Just thought of something. With nail guns used almost exclusively now, they forget the old school, hammer and nail. How hard is it to just part drive in an occasional nail to hold it????? You will most likely damage the wall, and/or skirting , if you are not extremely careful, if he fully installs them. Re: Buying flooring online- please help 19Aug 29, 2012 2:17 pm Thanks so much Mark S, you gave me the courage to ask my builder again. If I understand correctly, you cannot use nail guns (e.g. use fewer nails) to tack on the skirting, it has to be hand nailed? The installer will probably come with a nail gun but since it is such an easy task, I hope he can be flexible. Mark S He just needs to cut the skirts to fit, but not fully nail them to the wall. Re: Buying flooring online- please help 20Aug 29, 2012 2:24 pm I have another question regarding flooring...should the bamboo be laid all in the same direction, i.e. the living room, bedrooms, etc. or differently per room, depending on where the doors/windows are? I think it must be easiest (and least wastage) to lay it parallel to the longest part of the house (i.e. not across the corridor as it would require short planks)? Sorry I am not good at explaining this...I hope someone will know what I mean. The plan (excuse the pun) ideally is to do just that and take the basic floor plans and elevations that we have bought and have a draftsman replicate them to comply prior… 2 1146 Yeah I don't know why I came to a forum. Place is full of wierdos/pedos thought internet may help but I suppose I'll try my luck with someone in person. Cheers.
