Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 09, 2008 8:25 am We had smeone suggest a better layout for our main bathroom wouldbe a shower over bath, this would open up the room a lot.
We have an ensuite so this would be the kid's bathroom. My husband was originally against the idea, any ideas/opinions I can give to him? Thanks Andrea Re: Shower over bath 3Aug 09, 2008 11:18 am It used to be a standard bathroom thing herein WA way back when i was a kid. When we built last time (19 years ago) we did this for exactly the same reason you are considering it. We wanted a roomier bathroom. Our kids loved it when they were little as they would put the plug in and lie in the bath after their shower. BUT if you have the room avoid it. You do need to consider how you are going to shelter the rest of the bathroom from the water splash in a way that is visually nice as well as practical. If we had to do it again I think I'd want a hand shower on a rail type shower. It also makes for a slippery shower base which is not the safest option. Something to consider if you might have less physically able visitors staying.
I suspect for resale a separate shower would be more appealing as well. D@n Looks wrong? You watch someone having a shower? Re: Shower over bath 4Aug 09, 2008 11:24 am I think it's a real last resort option. I'd keep them seperate if at all possible. Everyone I know hates them so it would derfinitely impact on value/resale long term in my opinion.
Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Shower over bath 5Aug 09, 2008 5:28 pm Our new place has 2 bathrooms, one standard main one and one ensuite.
The ensuite has a separate shower across one whole wall with nice clear screen. No bath. The main bathroom has the shower over the bath, which we don't really like, but it doesn't bother us in this case cause it's sort of the "other" bathroom. It's got the washing machine and dryer in it too (which is something I HATE. Having a laundry in a bathroom) but again, it's not our most used bathroom. It'll be used more as the laundry, a guest bathroom and the cat's toilet. lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Shower over bath 6Aug 11, 2008 3:37 pm If you really think you don't have the room it is a good option. They do give the feel of more sapce and generally this second bathroom is for guests and kids. Consider any tropical holidays ie Phuket , Bali and Singapore last time we were there in any of the nice hotels this was the option in the bathrooms and they always looked nice with the glass and the tiles etc. We also considered this option but ended up having the room to seperate. So I have researched and found some really nice looking pictures in the kitchen and bathroom mags. Re: Shower over bath 7Aug 11, 2008 4:17 pm I agree - preferable to have separate shower and bath, but would prefer shower over bath rather than miss out on a bath/shower. Especially in kids' bathroom - if they're young now they'll be having baths, but in time they'll want a shower. Re: Shower over bath 8Aug 11, 2008 4:28 pm Having broken an ankle two months after moving into our new house - don't do the shower over the bath unless your OTHER shower has great disabled access!!
At least one shower in your house should be easy to get to and a nice size (at least 1100mm x 900mm)... just in case someone needs to shower with a cast on! Re: Shower over bath 9Aug 11, 2008 7:39 pm agreed lym.. We are having our ensuite as a full on hobless
shower for this exact reason. The shower in our ensuite last time had a highish hob and it was a nightmare when I spent most of 6 months with a wire cage on and through my leg bones. You need to reference the manufactures installation guide, your supplier may have strengthened the base where it is not required to sit on a bed. 1 1797 Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included.
