Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Aug 10, 2012 5:14 pm I'm interested to find out if anyone has used a renovation company or similar, to conduct a small renovation of either a bathroom or kitchen. What was your experience? Would you use them again? And do you feel you would have been better off project managing and getting trades people yourself? I'm interested in companies used for both on a rental property or in your own unit/apartment Re: Renovation Companies for Unit/Apartment. 2Aug 11, 2012 11:35 am You will save money by doing it yourself. If you employ someone to project manage they have to get paid on top opf tradies. Sometimes they add more on the tradies cost also. Post what you want to do and where you are located in the home renovation section for more specific advice. Re: Renovation Companies for Unit/Apartment. 3Aug 12, 2012 10:10 am There are fors and against. In my experience of doing several bathroom renovations I have found that people who want to do it themselves often have fancy ideas and buy cheap imported tap ware and fixtures from the large warehouses. This often results in problems as the product is often faulty and then try and get the warehouses to come and fix it because we as plumbers will not take responsibility for customer bought inferior product. My view is get the job project managed and have the security of qualified tradesmen doing a professional and guaranteed job. You will not get a guarantee from the plumber on the product or the fittings used if he didn't buy them. I'll give you an example of a customer stuff up that we came across. The customer wanted us to renovate his bathroom, (the second one of his that we had done). He bought this beautiful fully enclosed free standing bath. The bathroom was on the first floor. He was shocked when we told him that we would have to either tear a hole in the outside brick wall or cut a hole in his loungeroom ceiling, thereby having to repaint his entire loungeroom, dining room and kitchen ceiling at his cost. All this just so we could reach the waste for connection to the trap. Re: Renovation Companies for Unit/Apartment. 4Sep 26, 2012 11:22 pm Hi Simon! We bought cheap imported tapware from warehouse-type places for our home. . . 2 and a half years ago, and it's never given us any problems! We put in mixer taps because we tend to be a bit heavy handed on taps, and used to go through a lot of tap washers because of turning them off a bit too hard. I would imagine this would be good for tenants, as it's a paid to have to pay a plumber a call-out fee to go fix a tap washer (oh yes. . . I've had to do this as a landlord). If you look at SunshineT's home building thread, she bought some really nice vanity basins from an online company in QLD . . . she seems very happy with them, and they look excellent in the photos. I just think that cheap doesn't always mean nasty. I had an old shower unit that broke on me and when I took it off, there were only 2 water pipes, instead of the normal 2 water pipes and a shower head pipe.
