Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 07, 2012 5:03 pm Hi all, I have a bunch of Alexandra and golden Cain palm trees planted roughly 40-50cm from the fence. I was wondering if that was too close, when we bought them the people who sold us the palms said they could go right against the fence without any drama. I just wanted to get a 2nd opinion before they get too big. Cheers Jason Re: How close to plant palm trees to fence 2Aug 10, 2012 3:57 pm Probably a bit close in my opinion. We have a Kentia and some Bangalows along our back fence and I planted those about a metre away fifteen years ago. The trunks themselves are fine but as they get bigger some palms do get quite large root balls which would impact on a fence. Stewie Re: How close to plant palm trees to fence 3Aug 11, 2012 5:56 pm The trunks on those are going to really widen out. The root ball wont be a problem due to them being soft fibrous structures. its the gradual expansion of the trunks that needs to be allowed for. A Bangalow will be best about 1m out and the Kentia, about the same at a minimum. The selection of palms you have chosen says to me where they were purchased and that tells me who grew them. If I am correct they are not going to handle extremes well, nor winds or full sun for many years. The grower concerned grows in full shade to speed growth and drop production costs and deliver a cheaper plant to the retail outlet. The tags will say one thing but the plants ability to perform is compromised for the sake of price. Re: How close to plant palm trees to fence 4Aug 11, 2012 5:57 pm If you have ever seen a healthy Gold Cane, well you'll need metres of width available. Re: How close to plant palm trees to fence 5Aug 21, 2012 1:14 am Thanks for the feedback. I read on PACSOA that the Alexandra and the Bangalow palms trunks grow to around a foot in diameter which would give me roughly 30cm of clearance between the fence. Would it be possible to prune the golden canes back to keep it off the fence?? If not when would be the best time to transplant it? Re: How close to plant palm trees to fence 6Aug 21, 2012 1:23 pm I can post a photo of at least 3 Bangalows ready at hand, that well exceed 1foot in width. The gold canes won't respond well at all to be pruned. Ultimately you are better off using the right plant in the right place Re: How close to plant palm trees to fence 7Aug 21, 2012 2:33 pm Thanks for that, I was hoping I could get away with it but looks like I get the fun task of replanting about 20 palms Probably should have listened to that small voice in the back of my head when I was planting them.. ahh well thanks again for the replies. I'm looking into palms too. Is there a smaller variety of leafy green - say a metre or so high - perhaps succulent - that would go well down a 2 metre wide side area - say spaced about 2 to 3 metres apart. I'd like a flower but green would be good. Surrey Hills, Vic 3127 Garage is being built with metal, 3m distance away from my cover deck.
