Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 23, 2012 11:47 pm We're doing a mini renovation and we've got a month to get things done and I would prefer floorboards be sanded & polished prior to moving in. Kitchen is flat pack and will go in 2 weeks after we move in. Our builder reckons floors should be done after kitchen goes in and we just move out with 3 small kids for a week when it's done So has anyone put their kitchen cupboards in after floorboards have been sanded/polished? Re: Anyone sanded/polished floorboards before kitchen going 2Jul 24, 2012 11:36 am Our kitchen installer suggests we get the floor done first. He's always installing kitchens in established homes and does not damage floors. He would never expect someone to have to get their floors repaired after he's been there. Re: Anyone sanded/polished floorboards before kitchen going 3Jul 24, 2012 12:47 pm Is can be better to getyour floor boards sanded and polished first. The reason why this doesnt happen is due to damage as people have stated, and the fact that painting needs to occur after the kitchen is in. However it needs to be done before floors sanded - see the issue. I built my own house and could get aroudn this issue. Re: Anyone sanded/polished floorboards before kitchen going 4Jul 24, 2012 5:24 pm It can be done either way but if it was my house I would have the floors sanded and polished first and then have the kitchen installed. Its not hard to install a kitchen on a polished floor. Will now definitely get boards polished before moving in. 1sthome, I'll now keep an even closer eye on things when appliances go in. I'm hoping that because we're doing most of the work that we'll avoid scratching floors. Re: Anyone sanded/polished floorboards before kitchen going 8Jul 25, 2012 4:33 pm PaulMac Just be careful when putting the fridge in place, it's worth buying a 3mm sheet of mdf to put on the floor while you manoeuvre it into place. I couldnt agree more! We just left the kickboards and end panels off so the sander could get under the cupboards a bit. We then put the kickboards on after polishing. That way we didn't have to worry about it getting scratched. Fantastic idea, thank you!! Re: Anyone sanded/polished floorboards before kitchen going 12Jul 25, 2012 10:59 pm I installed pre-finished american oak floor boards from Tait flooring. There's no option to finish them later, as they arrive with all the paint stain and finish work completed. The kitchen cabinet maker had no problem with it - and in fact preferred to have the floorboards run all the way under the cabinetry. I would insist on doing it in this order. If you don't - you struggle with how to finish the flooring against the cabinetry - dealing with expansion joints, and also if you want to change anything later, you encounter challenges as the flooring is cut out around the kitchen otherwise. my house blog: http://sugarloafdrivebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Anyone sanded/polished floorboards before kitchen going 13Aug 10, 2012 4:23 pm We had ours sanded and stained after our kitchen went in, they just left the kick boards off. Wouldn't you be worried about damage to the floor while the kitchens installed if they did it before? Wouldn't you be worried about damage to the floor while the kitchens installed if they did it before? I install kitchens on finished floors all the time. Its not that hard. I also build proper kickboards out of plywood that arnt removable. We dont use the cheap plastic legs. Instead we use a full box construction plywood kick. They support the cabinets so much better. Kitchens can be installed either way, but I would personally want to finish my floors first.
