Also, think about what type of camera you want to use. IP (internet enabled) ones are better but slightly more expensive. You can set them up to view them on your iPad/phone/computer from anywhere in the world. The old style analog cameras are cheaper but less flexible. Depending on what type of camera you go for, make sure you get the right cabling done. Finally, if you decide to go for a wireless intercom, just remember, you still need to power it. CCTV pre-wire: It says that it includes the run of stranded Cat5 data cable and 4c power cable. If an analog camera is to be used, a pair of passive baluns (data to coax adapter) will be required. It's saying, if you want to use an analog camera, it will use the same Cat 5 cable but you will need adapters at both ends. Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 9Jul 17, 2012 2:19 pm Finalising our smart wiring plan. We chose to prewire 3 CCTV cameras, however not sure if we'll need more cameras??? How hard is to wire CCTV cameras after the house been built? We'll probably go with wireless intercom as well instead of paying another $400 to prewire it (hope it's right decision)... Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 10Nov 08, 2012 9:38 pm Can anyone recommend me Home Monitoring and Larm Combo. Essentially I am looking for system with around 4 motion activated cameras, which is connected to DVR and also streams on the ineternet. The system has capability to send me an email when motion is detected so I can veiw the live streaming on any mobile device. Moreover the motion should also trigger alarm which can be disabled remotely. I would also like a GPRS/GSM backup for the system just in case the the culprit were to cut the wire, so that i could still veiw the primary camera via mobile device, by ringing the GPRS GSM number. ashrey|^| Re: Security System, CCTV and Intercom 11Dec 02, 2012 6:30 pm You're going to get sick of me posting this...but if your a little computer savvy you can do a full IP camera system no issue, I went through a few before settling on xprotect does the streaming to a phone thing, does the alerts thing (will SMS you an alert with attached screen shots etc...) It's too hard to say whether it will be cheaper doing it afterwards this can only be answered by looking at the property. There is no need to waste money running 4 core cable alongside CAT5/CAT6 purely for the provision of Analog Cameras via use of Balun, any proper smart wiring company who does CCTV pre-wiring will know this. Having intercom separate to the CCTV can be more convenient, if you dont intend to have live 24 hour display of your CCTV in a common room, having an intercom as-well as a better choice and will probably save more power.
