Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 18, 2012 4:48 pm Hi Folks, We went with Empire Zoysia after reading about it here with Fu and loved all the aspects. We're in Melbourne and were told not to lay it from May to August because it would just be too cold for it to take. We put it in mid April. That may seem late but April has been a warm month for many years with very little rain. You guessed it - the next day it started raining and it seems like its been raining ever since with very few sunny days. We used molasses the day it was laid down and Seasol the next day. Now it's looking very sad (can't use the word d*dgy apparently) - yellowy brown and still quite soft underfoot. My wife tried pulling up a corner on one of the rolls but it was quite firmly attached. Is there any other advice from EZ turf layers? Any comments from Fu would be appreciated, if he was around. I did read all of the threads and I do acknowledge that the first winter can be very ugly until it gets established so if that's all it is, then fine. But if there's something I can do to help it along, I'd like to. Another application of Seasol? Any other product over winter? Thanks folks. Advice? 2Jun 18, 2012 5:08 pm Hi, I laid my EZ in Eastern Melbourne in January and it is now excellent. It has yellowed a little but the roots are very deep and you can't see any seams from the pieces of turf. I think you should just be patient this winter and give it a feed of Molasses, Seasol and Powerfeed when it is not already too wet from the rains we have been getting. Try to feed it once a week if you can (weather permitting), apparently that will keep it going over winter. I'm still trying to feed mine once a month. It is good news that you can't pull up the corners, that means your roots are starting to take hold. I think you will just need to be patient over this winter and get ready to watch it look awesome in Spring. Good Luck. Most turf would struggle to be in top nick being laid any later than the start of April. Warm or not the day length shortens as does the avaliable light for photosynthisis ( the bit that makes it grow and stay green). Just sit it out, little green shoots will pop out in august and be pretty good by october. I have had ez for 3 years in NE melb where it gets cool over winter. From my experience, no amount of nutrients will give you results in winter. It will stay greener if you dont get frosts, dont walk or use it, and it gets full sun (when its out in winter ). Mine is pretty much yellowy green because the kids give it a thrashing, where no one walks on it, in full sun, it looks fine. Re: E Z Turf laid in April, looking very sad. Advice? 6Jun 19, 2012 10:33 am Thanks Beatrix! I was just so worried I was going to lose it because it went down so late. In the last 12 years April has been so warm that I thought it would be fine. Then this year it was awful! Advice? 7Jun 19, 2012 11:38 am Yeah you did lay it late but as long as its firmly rooted down you will be fine. If its brown and doing your head in next winter i can guide you through a method to keep it green by sowing in a winter grass that dies off in summer. Re: E Z Turf laid in April, looking very sad.
