Re: Would you hire an Interior Decorator? 5Jun 14, 2012 2:54 pm I think with the public spending drying up according to retailers, and the majority of people financially wary of whats to come, you would be dealing in a limited/shrinking market. If you are asked what experience or examples of other places you have decorated, being a newbie with none or few, you may find it hard to get a foot in the door. Arfur Re: Would you hire an Interior Decorator? 6Jun 14, 2012 4:03 pm Hmmm yes just what I thought unfortunately! Thanks all for your opinons, I would hate to committ to something (especially when i have small kids), to find out in the end that there is no market for it. Hmm, now to find a new career idea..... any suggestions?? Re: Would you hire an Interior Decorator? 7Jun 14, 2012 8:07 pm Hi Mel, I HATE to think you are put off before you even start. If interior design is your passion, WHY NOT study it?? I presume your ultimate dream would be to have your own freelance business? To achieve any dream, it must be broken down into practical, achievable steps. Some places that employ designers/colour consultants, even part time, that you have not thought about, where you could gain experience after training: Tiling shops, furniture shops, cabinet makers, soft furnishing outlets both retail and wholesale. Also architects, builders- think display home interior designing, paint shops via referrals, and visual merchandising. I know of someone who studied visual merchandising (shop window dressing of all kinds) at TAFE and has gone on to interior design. There's probably more I haven't mentioned, these were just off the top of my head. People skills and retail experience count here too, especially if you want to run your own business one day from home!! So to do some retail training would be invaluable for you as well. It's like anything, you start at the bottom to gain experience, with the view in mind to building up your own portfolio. One day you will achieve your goal, and meanwhile there's no reason not to enjoy the scenery on the way to your destination!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: Would you hire an Interior Decorator? 8Jun 15, 2012 8:16 am Yes - I would hire an interior decorator in a heartbeat if they didn't set themselves up as being so costly. The shop assistant at our local hardware store has a colour consultancy on the side but it works out to be about $100 hour and she has a 4.5 hour minimum. Wha...? I'll pay someone for expertise which took years to get and and a couple of degrees thrown in - but to come out of a TAFE course in design and then want that much money is ridiculous. Re: Would you hire an Interior Decorator? 9Jun 15, 2012 3:07 pm It's like that in any industry where you're contracting and the work is scarce. You need to remember these professions need to pay for the time they're not working as much as when they are. There's a good reasons long contracts bill out at lower rates to short ones, so you might always pay $500 for a half day of work. I don't think that the scarcity of work justifies why a client should pay for the time that an interior designer is not working. If that's the way many interior designers set up their business then it's easy to see why their work is scarce. Re: Would you hire an Interior Decorator? 11Jun 15, 2012 9:14 pm Yep will poss be getting one if i struggle putting the inside all together. But the designer we had supplied through our build was on another page or planet to what we like. Walked out of meet & said "that was a waste of time" Ended up working it out myself, drove everyone & myself crazy but i worked it out She liked white windows on limestone brick n black roof ,we were going earthy, rustic colours & style I think interior designers need to know fads, different styles & WHAT the customer likes. Not what the designer likes. So if you can do Country, cottage, sleek etc thats great! I vote for doing what you love,so go for it,you maybe fab at it & love everyday! Good luck. The sole reason is that the amount of time I save more than justifies the cost of the int designer. Mind you I didnt agree with all her suggestions and I was firm when i said no to what i disagreed with. A successful designer will work out what you want and make it palatable. Re: Would you hire an Interior Decorator? 13Jul 02, 2012 8:44 pm It is more about how you get on with other people. You should be very creative and full of ideas but you should also be able to sell your ideas to people. I have used the services of a decorator and if my budget allows it I would do it again and probably try to contact the same guy.
