I just have a quick question in relation to internet, I know I have been reading alot of you are having issues with speeds etc through the fibre optic providers - is this the same case if you chose to go wireless rather than through the fibre optics? My computer knowledge is very basic so any advice would be greatly appreciated I'll try to answer your question without too much technical jargon. If you don't understand something, yell out The answer to this question really stems from what you consider to be wireless. Each home in the estate has access to the fibre optic network. You can choose to not have your house hooked up to the network in terms of internet (I think they still hook your house up to fibre optic for the TV signal as it is not allowed to have any antennas on your roof) but then the only other form of internet connection would be mobile 3G – ie. Telstra, Vodafone or Optus 3G internet that you can get on your mobile phone, and your computer too if you have a 3G USB adapter, for example. 3G internet is not considered to be wireless - sure, it doesn't use wires, but wireless in technology circles generally refers to WiFi networks. WiFi in your house is just another way to connect your computer to your modem (or other computers or devices) and does not dictate whether you have internet or not. Generally, it replaces what's called Ethernet connections, you might see in an office of computers that there are these thick blue cables coming out of computers and hooking up to a modem or a port in the wall. Basically, although WiFi can be utilised with an internet connection, they are not the same thing. You can have a WiFi network without any internet connection (you will just only be able to see other computers in the same network / house), and you can have an internet connection without WiFi / wireless (you'll just need those blue cables coming out of your computer). They can work in conjunction with each other, or separately. If by wireless you are really meaning 3G connectivity, the fibre optic connection wins hands-down. It is cheaper per month, you get much higher speeds, higher reliability and much more internet bandwidth quota to use per month. With a 3G connection, you are paying more to have much less bandwidth quota, it has higher latency (it takes longer for you to arrive at a website) and speeds fluctuate much more than with a fibre connection. Hope that answers your questions, feel free to ask more if needed. Re: LYNDARUM/AURORA/SUMMERHILL ESTATES: Epping, Victoria 2536May 09, 2012 3:44 pm Hi acherion , Wow thank you so much for that. It's has definately cleared it up a bit for me that's for sure. I had been on here reading about people having slow internet problems etc so wasn't sure if it was worth looking into the fibre optics or not. Re: LYNDARUM/AURORA/SUMMERHILL ESTATES: Epping, Victoria 2537May 09, 2012 9:55 pm Can anyone recommend a good local GP? Not looking for a clinic but a single GP that will actually spend time with their patients. Not fussed about bulk billing. Thanks. I had been on here reading about people having slow internet problems etc so wasn't sure if it was worth looking into the fibre optics or not. The complaints about slow Internet mainly came from people who were on the old fibre network (people in stages 1 - 7), this network was run by a company called Arise, who do not service the estate anymore. Since their exit, all those people with a connection to Arise were migrated over to the new network which has support for multiple ISPs (only two for now though) and the speeds and reliability has increased greatly since then. Re: LYNDARUM/AURORA/SUMMERHILL ESTATES: Epping, Victoria 2539May 11, 2012 4:52 pm Exactly as Acerhion said, we were with Arise last year, and the difference in speeds and reliability of the network have improved significantly! Much happier now that Arise is gone! Re: LYNDARUM/AURORA/SUMMERHILL ESTATES: Epping, Victoria 2540May 15, 2012 1:26 pm Hi all . I am building on Edgars Road .
