Home insulation question 6Mar 15, 2012 9:22 pm I live not far from Adelaide (our temp is a few degrees warmer then Adelaide) but we have 5 to ceilings 2.5 external walls and 1.5 internal walls. House is still bring constructed but feels quite cool in there when it's 38 outside and obviously there are no window coverings at present which will make a difference once up. I would upgrade if you can afford it. (McLaren knows my passion for this!). We are building ATM and an environmental consultant friend told us that sarking (or sisellation as it is also called - it is like a foil) reflects the radiant heat and is extremely effective. And cheap. So if you are on a tight budget, I would keep the batts you have (of course upgrade if you have $$) then add on sarking to 1. all roof areas and 2. western walls. Good luck! I use thermal imaging camera and regularly find poorly fitted insulation(Melbourne). Most new homes are (thermal) leaking buckets. Put your builder on notice that you will do final inspection with thermal imaging and to take special care in installation Good luck Foremost Building Expert in Australia, assisting with building problems/disputes, building stage inspections,pre-contract review advice for peace of mind 200 blogs http://www.buildingexpert.net.au/blog Re: Home insulation question 10Mar 17, 2012 7:45 am Hey SunshineT, in VIC Siselation is included in all builds (that's when we get excited about our house being "wrapped") but not sure about SA. Re: Home insulation question 11Mar 17, 2012 8:04 am Thanks for all the information guys. I have a meeting with the builder today so I will ask about Siselation. Sounds like the best bet is to have both Siselation and the higher rate insulation. I will let you know how i go. Cheers Re: Home insulation question 12May 15, 2012 7:22 pm hi there. anyone here knows how much it costs? we are thinking of upgrading as well, but my ss wouldn't give me the price not even an approximate so I'm just worried that if we do it, it's gonna be beyond our budget. we're building with Henley by the way.. also, what are your recommendations? thanks. I don't know the exact price, but my friend (enviro consultant) says it is the cheapest form of insulation. Should only be a few hundred dollars. Getting the whole house 'wrapped' as they do in Victoria might be in the thousands though. I find it incredible that building have sarking in the ceiling as an upgrade. I guess this price will vary from builder and state. Cheers Lab Home insulation question 15May 16, 2012 10:50 pm Ours was $1300 I think, much cheaper to do it yourself but you need to do it at the right time Jasmin Hickinbotham Belmont - modified Signed: February 2011 Slab should go down before 2012 My build thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=52310&p=799483#p799483 0 6381 What you are looking at is fibrous plaster, true gypsum, it is cast on horizontal beds with fibers included to give strength.
