Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 01, 2012 10:42 am Hi all, I laid some buffalo palmetto turf last weekend and followed all instructions provided by the company that delivered as well as online advice. It'd been less than a week and I've been watering it twice a day since its been laid and we've had a good balance of rain and sun but patches of the turf are going brown. The grass was delivered while I was at work on the Friday morning and was sitting in 37 degree heat. My wife managed to water it once during the day while it was all stacked up. We prepared the soil the week before with top soil and evened it out and kept it damp. We laid the turf early sat morning and soaked it straight away and by sat afternoon patches of the turf were going brown. Is there anything I can do to save the lawn or is it screwed?? HELP. 2Mar 01, 2012 11:28 am In case no one else responds and assuming you'd want a response quickly (....as in today!) i might offer some advice based on what i know and what i've read here on this forum. I might prompt you for further details in case it helps the more knowledgeable people like Beatrix Kiddo and Fu Manchu. I see you're in Fawkner. I'm not far. We are copping it right now in terms of rainfall. It hasn't stopped raining for the last few days and will continue to rain. We'll get a fair bit on Saturday according to BOM: http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/melbourne.shtml So im assuming the soil has been quite wet the last few days so water is not an issue. Its quite common to see rollout go brown around the edges if its not compacted down properly right after laying. If the turf is not pushed down into the soil adequately, the roots will not make their way into the soil you prepared earlier. But it usually does come good once roots start to establish. Did you apply any fertiliser before or after? Was the existing soil tilled/rotary hoed/turned over? How much topsoil did you apply? First thing i'd be doing is applying some Seasol and Powerfeed. I wouldn't do anything else until someone with more knowledge responds. Re: Newly laid turf going brown. HELP. 3Mar 01, 2012 11:41 am Thanks for the quick reply Krilnik, we turned over the old soil, removed all the rocks and old building scraps and laid a good amount of good quality top soil one week before we laid the turf. I even hired a lawn roller to even out the soil and then used it on the freshly laid lawn as soon as it was laid to secure the roots into the soil. I'll go out and buy those products you suggested and see how I go. Re: Newly laid turf going brown. HELP. 4Mar 01, 2012 11:57 am No worries. No harm in applying seasol/powerfeed during light rain. Hand water it onto the lawn of course, let the rainfall further push it into the roots - that's where all the action is. I know someone like Fu Manchu will also suggest mixing Molasses with your Seasol and Powerfeed mix. I use a Molasses/Seasol/Powerfeed mix every second week (if it hasn't rained for a while). My backyard lawn is about 6 months old and looks great. I'd apply this to your lawn weekly for the first month or two. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=15058&hilit=molasses+how+to+use+it There's a lot to learn when it comes to maintaining a lawn. I've spent hours upon hours trawling through these forums and i'm still learning things. Hopefully someone else with a bit of knowledge can further diagnose your issue and respond rather quick...
