We manhandled them up and with the help of some temp bracing were able to get them in place. We had a few nervous moments doubting whether the pre-drilled holes would line up, but it all went together really well. The carpenter had it done in 1 day.....we would have still been struggling after 1 week - part of our learning curve has involved being able to see what is acheiveable for us and what we need to pay a professional to do.....the front portico was one of those jobs. We were able to build the 2 side verandas as they were straight going. Our original plans for the cosmetic look of the house were that we were going to bag the bricks, so we sourced some cheap mixed faced commons for $385 per 1000 and had them delivered onsite. The brickies came and started on the garage and unfortunately there were a few wire cut bricks facing outwards....no worries, we'll be covering them up anyway!! But as the brickwork progressed and especially the front face of the house ended up looking so nice we had second thoughts about bagging them. The chocolate bricks that were used on the front would have been perfect if we'd chosen them.....only we wouldn't have picked them, or the plain grey mortar - we think it looks really authentic to the style of house we're building......if only it weren't for the lighter bricks and the wire cut faces Anyway - there is a house in Morpeth that I've admired for years and they have painted the sides and left the front bricks bare - so that's what we'll plan to do. We knew our brickes could pull this off - it's a dying trade as you don't see many chimneys on new houses these days. We gave them a rough verbal description of how we thought it might look and then left it up to them. The end result is a lovely, simple, beautifully proportioned chimney (well, we think so ) We can see people driving past our house doing a double take when they see the chimney.....mind you, it's not a propper wood fire burning chimney as we have town gas and plan to use that - been there/done that with slow combustion fires. I won't go into too much detail with regards to the roofing - lets just say it was a very stressful time, we didn't know the roofers personally beforehand and if it wasn't for only 1 of the roofers being a competent tradesmen we wouldn't have the finished job we do....a very stressful time and a very near miss. It ended up taking weeks to complete, especially the area of the portico - it had to be done right and took some time. Our gyprock is due for delivery in 2 weeks, the Garage door is ready for installation once the gyprock has gone up on the ceiling of the garage. Our down pipes are ready to be connected....getting quotes on driveways and amassing quite a bit of clean fill in our front yard. We've had a few petty thefts.....some tools, a ladder a most recently our front door and lockset. All of which are devestating at the time but upon looking back we've been extremely lucky that we haven't had any other damage done. Fingers crossed and touch wood !!! The kit comes with fibro, but we're going to line it with blueboard as it gives a neater finish. We've deviated from the plans under the front portico to allow for a vaulted type of effect in the centre rather than a straight through lining, so the blueboard will allow us to handle the tricky angles.
