I believe that this would warp the pit in time as the clay soil will expand. I thought about digging around the pit and filling it with concrete, but am not sure if I am going overboard. I understand your concern as I dont like these (cheap option) plastic pits, preferring concrete poured in situ. From my experience the reason the top grating is so heavy is to stop the plastic walls collapsing inwards. Concreting around yours could help but what about the base?
