Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 15, 2012 12:20 pm Hi all I want to bring this issue because It happened to me twice That someone stole something from near my property. the 1st one is couple months ago when some lowlife prick stole my garden bin one Friday when I left home for work after it was emptied by the council truck. That one trigger my curiosity regarding the security in Somerfiled Estate, but It doesn't bother me much because I can claim another one from the council. the 2nd one just happened recently, to be precise Sat nite last night. Someone just stolen my GPS unit from inside my car!. All the stuff inside the car was scattered all over the place. I just park my car outside the house as most people in the are do, apparently this become an opportunity from someone in this area to check every single car along the street to looks for some valuables inside the parked cars. In my opinion the theft is living in the area. I live in the stage 1 D ( earlier stage). Just precaution to everyone DONT leave your car unattended or unlocked. Park you car inside the garage if you can!!! I put this issue in this forum because I know the sales office would not respond to my report and complaint, they will probably say " we will take and listen your complaint ( without any action to follow up the issue)" Anyone experience the same problem ???? please feel free to put some opinion. unhappy resident security issues !!! Thief living in the Somerfield Estate!! 2Jan 15, 2012 12:41 pm Sorry to hear what happened. To be fair though, there are thieves everywhere. Not just in your estate. I remember the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago when I was living in oakleigh. I am what most people would consider a careful person. I always lock my car. But that day, I had to bring home carts and carts of stuff from work. After busy moving all the carts into the house, I must have forgotten my routine of checking all doors. That's probably one of the very few nights that I forgot to lock the door and my gps was gone. Re: security issues !!! Thief living in the Somerfield Estat 4Jan 16, 2012 10:49 am This has been an ongoing issue in the Parkdale area also, and police have sent out letters to residence. Its kids that walk the streets and check every car door. We unfortunately got hit before we were aware and my partner had his glove box raided. They then targeted his car, forced and objects into his locks and a window broken. Its been going on for over a year, and day we forget to lock our cars we notice the compartments open, luckily only had things stolen the first time as we no longer keep anything in our cars. Thief living in the Somerfield Estat 5Jan 16, 2012 12:23 pm As the others have said, there are thieves & youths who cause trouble or damage property everywhere, not just in your estate. Our car was keyed while parked in our driveway once. This has nothing to do with the sales office or land developer of your estate, so I'm not sure why you would think of complaining to them - what action would you be expecting they take? It's a matter for the police & the community. The thief who stole your GPS may or may not live in your estate. They usually target an area, coming in & going through cars & then leaving. It's unlikely the bin incident is related to the theft from your car. You should never leave any valuables, especially a GPS, in your vehicle when it's parked, that includes at home or while at the shops or anywhere else. GPS's are the most commonly targeted item to steal from cars. It's unfortunate that this has happened, but you should not feel that it's a problem with your estate. Just do what you can to minimise your exposure to possible thefts. Theft always makes people feel vulnerable & paranoid that it will happen again, but it usually doesn't (I say usually, that's no guarantee ) unless you leave yourself open to it. We've continued to leave our car parked in the drive (have no choice at this house -- can't wait to move into our new house!) & since the damage over 1 year ago nothing else has happened. Situations such as Jen06 are not that common, but there are areas where it's worse of course. Thief living in the Somerfield Estat 6Jan 19, 2012 9:23 am kstubun, Are you on Stafford Street or Clarendon Street? This part of Somerfield is highly visible to people driving past along Perry Road and Greens Road and you get a lot of through traffic driving to and from Dandenong South Industrial Area. Not sure if the fact that there seems to be more rentals now in Somerfield adds to the risk and the old part of Keysborough is not regarded as Melbourne's safest suburb so we will not be immune from crime. Haven't heard too many other complaints about theft so it might be an isolated case. I'm more concerned about the two very large dogs that were roaming the streets themselves a few weeks back that chased me inside and dug up some of my front lawn!
