It's going to be hard to clean as well and I agree the join does look darker/dirty in the closeup photo. What are they going to do above the splashback and behind the rangehood? Hope they do the right thing by you because that's just not on (imho)!! Thanks HappyCamper, I am glad that someone agrees and that Im not being too pedantic! Im pretty confidentant that the builder is going to walk in and say thats not right. He had explained to DH that there would probably be two joins either side of cooktop further down so Im sure (hoping) he wont be happy with this. These builders are all about quality and he even made them rip a whole wall of plaster off because it wasnt level enough. Even DH who is a perfectionist didnt pick up on it. Here's hoping anyway!! Why could the join be dirty? Do you think its just the colour or the way they have fitted it?? Re: Splashback join in centre off cooktop 7Jan 08, 2012 12:32 pm It's hard to say why the join is dirty....my first guess (and it's only a guess) is that they ran their dirty finger down the edge and dirt was transferred to the silicone??? Maybe....the cut edge of the glass reflects more colour? although I've played with glass doing leadlighting I know it can throw different hues....again, it's only a guess!! A few times I've noticed my ensuite has a whole tinge of light green when there is no green in there at all (wall tiles are white and floor is light cream)....it comes from the glass basin, shower screen and mirror and only happens now and then. Different room lighting can make a big difference as well and 'maybe' that's working against that centre join in your splashback. Ed (eco_classics) would be able to answer these questions much better than I could. Do hope your builder sticks with you on this and does the right thing. Fingers crossed!! Re: Splashback join in centre off cooktop 8Jan 08, 2012 1:59 pm We have a 4.2m benchtop, we actually have 2 joins.. we have a section of 3.5m in the middle.. and two joins each end.. you can see one of the joins on the right here.. the colours are little off btw (camera phone!) Re: Splashback join in centre off cooktop 9Jan 08, 2012 5:18 pm Thanks humble, This is what I thought the builder was going to have to do as well, but obviously the glass company had other ideas. I would be happy to have it like yours and this is what the builder had told my husband was happening so hopefully this week we can sort it out. Fingers crossed! Re: Splashback join in centre off cooktop 10Jan 08, 2012 8:54 pm Hi MelanieG, You are definately not being too pedantic!!! I wouldn't be happy with that! Especially if I had been told it would be done with the joins at the side of the cooktop. (and for the record, I think humbles looks great - if you need to do joins that's the way to do it) I'm not sure if your builders will do anything about it but I really think it's worth pushing - you have to look at it everyday!! I have been trying to design my new kitchen so that the splashback isn't too big to avoid having a join so I went to a local splashback supplier who told me they will do up to 4metres without a join (as long as they have access to get it into position - e.g. no sharp bends to get around). I am not having any cut outs (not sure if that makes a difference). I also found a website that says glass splashback maximum size 5 metres in length subject to site asessment. I would not only question where the join is but also whether it's really needed at all!!! At the very least, the fact that it looks 'dirty' needs to be looked into. Good luck, I wish you all the best, keep us posted. By the way, nice kitchen!!! Re: Splashback join in centre off cooktop 11Jan 08, 2012 10:24 pm Certainly not too pedantic! The whole point of glass splashbacks (aside from looking gorgeous) is that you DO NOT have any joins/grout/silicone behind the cooktop, and hence making for an easy-to-clean, hygienic surface! I hope your builder gets this fixed up for you! Good luck! On another note - you're kitchen is lovely! Can you let us know what materials (brands/colours) you've used? Re: Splashback join in centre off cooktop 13Jan 09, 2012 8:21 am Thanks everyone for the replies and comments on our kitchen. We think the builder is back this week so will see how we go.
