Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Proposed Speed Hump on our Road 2Nov 09, 2011 8:42 am I'm only trying to help you put together a case against it I promise. AlpineRaven - people doing burnouts after or on the humps That would be an offense on the count of the driver doing it and is not the responsibility of Council. AlpineRaven - utes with nails or paint going too fast causing "fall out" of the utes due building constructions down that road. If this happens just report it so the council/police/relevant body can deal with that circumstance if it arises AlpineRaven - Since they're building bollards, we have very small nature strip, after they build it - wont have nature strip for visitors cars. It's illegal(in Vic at least) to park on the nature strip, so I'd remove this from any further argument lodged with council. AlpineRaven - worried due speed and might cause future impacts on other cars due too fast or under estimate of speed limits They are there to slow people down. If someone has an accident or crashed because they fail to slow down or are not paying attention its not the speed humps (or council's) fault AlpineRaven - wouldn't it decrease house market value? How exactly? AlpineRaven - noises after cars going over the humps The noise shouldn't be a whole lot more that regular street traffic passing by AlpineRaven do you think I should raise it to the council? I wouldn't hold my breath on this one. I think the best way would be to find out if your neighbors are also against them and get together if your case. You might also do better by offering an alternate solution. Perhaps one of these? The traffic has decreased since they have gone in but the biggest difference is that idiotic drivers are no longer using their street as a race track!!! The benefits far outway any of the points you mention. We have a speed bump out the front of the new home we are currently building and I am very happy about it!!! Decreasing home value????????? Not in my opinion. Your street being used as a drag racing strip - now that would decrease your homes value!!!!!!! Re: Proposed Speed Hump on our Road 4Nov 09, 2011 11:38 am they increase noise, a car passing by a constant speed is much quiter than one slowing, going over the hump then accelerating. They don't always reduce traffic, if your street is still a brilliant rat run people might be willing to put up with a speed hump. Re: Proposed Speed Hump on our Road 5Nov 10, 2011 10:10 pm Our council recently installed speed humps on our street, which I initially though would be a great idea to reduce traffic and speeding on our street. Unfortunately: * There was no reduction in the number of cars using the street * Noise was greatly increased, both from hoons taking off too fast from the speed humps, and trucks not bothering to slow down at all for them * Residents directly adjacent the speed humps noticed cracks starting to appear in their homes from vibrations caused by trucks not bothering to slow down for the speed humps * Numerous cars were driving up onto the footpath to go around the speed humps, so the council then had to install bollards in the middle of the footpaths beside each speed hump Residents of the street petitioned the council and the speed humps were removed after about 2 months. I was definitely an advocate for them to initially be installed, but after living with them now realise how much of a problem they can be when installed on the wrong roads. Re: Proposed Speed Hump on our Road 7Nov 12, 2011 2:53 am I hate speed bumps with a passion and wouldn't want one at the front of my house. I'm one of those people most of you would classify as a "hoon" (though I haven't had a single parking/speeding fine, accident or even put so much as a scratch on my car) If I have to slow down to go over a speed hump, it just means I will rev it harder to speed up again which creates a lot of noise. There is also all the extra noise created from the suspension doing it's job and all the crap in the back jumping about. If you want to argue they make the suburb safer. Drivers stop concentrating on the kids, dogs, pedestrians to concentrate on the speed hump. Distracted drivers are dangerous! For the locals, it adds a lot of wear and tear which devalues your car. Speed bumps seem to be getting nastier and nastier. I've had my wheels aligned then driven over some new style speed humps. They were so nasty the wheel alignment was completly out by the time I made it home which ruins the cars ability to stop, turn and accelerate. For the typical Aussie who aligns their wheels once every 5 years if ever, this concerns me. Those 'slow point' things are merely a chicane and become a challenge. My route to the pizza place had these installed so instead of sitting on the usual 60 I would accelerate to see how fast I could go through them. Not sure the neighbourhood appreciated that... In my opinion, the best way to slow traffic is those elongated speed humps made out of paving. You can drive over the smoothly without needing to see a chiropracter but still ensure you slow down. You don't need to slow to an almost complete stop so there is less revving to get back up to speed afterwards and if you try to go over them too fast you will bottom out your car. Not many 'hoons' are going to do it again after that. Re: Proposed Speed Hump on our Road 8Nov 12, 2011 1:24 pm All your concerns are valid. We have had them installed out the back of where we are staying. We never had a problem with cars speeding - only doing burnouts down the road. Now they do burnouts on the bumps instead, even more so in the wet. So we have had a INCREASE in burnouts, a lot more noise and cars driving all over the road to avoid them. Also while I am a little ashamed to admit it, instead of pottering down the street at around 40-50kph I now go around 65kph for some reason I don't feel them and I'm not the only one. Now the traffic has decreased a little bit but increased down all the little narrow side streets. The road where the bumps were installed is a nice wide road with a nature strip each side then a foot path then approx 3m of lawn/weeds and then everyone's back fence. Not one house faces this street. I didn't bother trying to appeal as I am only staying here while I am building a house elsewhere. I think the only way to fix our problem would have been to block one end of the street so the 'hoons' would be easy to catch on camera. Good luck Re: Proposed Speed Hump on our Road 9Nov 14, 2011 4:02 pm I pretty much agree with meatbag. In my experience people who are likely to speed usually drive even faster before and after the speed hump to make up for their time they lost going over it. Nothing like hearing that loud induction noise of someone flooring it as they pull away from the speed hump. Unless you live in a court there will allways be people driving through the street or road you live on - some will act like idiots and most won't, but there is nothing the council can do to change that.
