Another way is to get early tomatoes, mid-season tomatoes and late season tomatoes...using tomatoes as the example. I think I planted either 7 or 8 different types of tomatoes...red/green/stripe/white/yellow/etc and I'm guessing these will fruit over a longer period, although my aim is to have a tomato salad with all the different shapes and colours. Jamie Oliver served it on one of his shows a few years ago and it looked fantastic...just sliced or diced tomatoes!! I put some pumpkin seeds directly into the ground last Saturday, Butternuts and another one which I think is called Pink Aussie, it's the one I like most for Pumpkin Soup during winter. The corn seeds I planted are Red, didn't have yellow seeds on hand but must get some. Beetroot seeds are regular round red, round white and cylindrical red...again just for a change!! I could eat beetroot and tomatoes all day!!!! I bought the seeds on eBay from a lady in Toowoomba, she has fresh seed and really fast getting them in the mail, I've bought from her for a few years. If you haven't already, see if you can get some yellow zucchini seeds...they look great in a stir fry with green zucchini. Still taste the same just look more inviting. Like you, I need to plant Basil with the tomatoes more for insect control than anything else because I can't eat it...gives me a migraine!! Other seeds I planted are lebanese cues, rhubarb, spring onions, red and green lettuce. A nice variety, the reason for colours is to get 2 x DGD's more interested in eating vegies which they shy away from at present. I'm not holding out too much hope of my vegie surviving because of the feral kids over the back fence who continually kick a soccer ball into my yard then climb over the 1800mm high fence to retrieve it. Of course, my side of the paling fence is the non-railed side but that doesn't stop them and I don't expect they will show any respect for my garden...they don't respect anything else!!
