Friends have 600mm and 1200 island and its great. Re: 700mm Bench Depth 3Oct 28, 2011 9:53 am ChrisandKate - we have the same. The 1200mm allowed us to have 600mm deep on one side then 300mm deep cupboards along with a 300 overhang on the other side. The wall with the range cooker is the standard 600mm depth. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: 700mm Bench Depth 4Oct 28, 2011 10:39 am 600mm is the standard width of bench tops. I have 600mm along two walls and a 1000mm island bench Re: 700mm Bench Depth 5Oct 28, 2011 10:47 am Yeah its just that with a 600mm bench + 1000mm walk way/workspace + 900mm island + room for breakfast bar chairs and walkway we ran out of room. The space still works really well with plenty of room(I hope, we haven't moved in yet but have had many a walk through and are certain it'll be fine) but if I had a choice I'd make the wall bench a little deeper and a much wider island. If I was getting a U or L shape kitchen I definitely go for 700mm benches min all the way with a 900mm return for a breakfast bar at one end. Our kitchen is what I would call Galley style with a breakfast bar one one side of the island. Re: 700mm Bench Depth 6Oct 28, 2011 11:17 am chrisandkate .... and a 1200mm Island...............Friends have 600mm and 1200 island and its great. kyton ChrisandKate - we have the same. The 1200mm allowed us to have 600mm deep on one side then 300mm deep cupboards along with a 300 overhang on the other side...... Woah ............. What's this.....Island width shouldn't be 600mm ?? You've got my attention now !!! Just assumed (yeah..yeah, I know....never assume anything !! ) that the island would of been 600mm too !!! So Kyton, Can you please tell me more about your setup ? Is it 600mm on the "kitchen side" and on the "other" side 600mm which is a 300mm cupboard and 300mm of overhang, so the cupboards are on the (I guess) family-room side, where the stools are, that it, when sitting at the stools your knees are near cupboards ? Or am I totally wrong (again) ?? Thanks, P_D . The working side of the kitchen is 600mm deep on both the island and the "appliance" wall. Then on the living room side the cupboards 300 + overhang 300 adds up to the other 600mm. The 300mm overhang is perfect. Personally I wouldn't have gone any deeper (not that you can with a slab of c'stone without sacrificing the slim cupboards). Some things are worth waiting for. Re: 700mm Bench Depth & Island Width 8Oct 28, 2011 4:24 pm kyton PD - exactly right..... I'm going to forward that to Mrs P_D On a more serious note.......*cough* photos ?? Thanks, P_D (Heck, Even iPhone quality would be great !!! Ta) . Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Pepsi, you can have any size island (within reason) that you want, if you are prepared to pay for it. There just isn't enough room in our kitchen to do it. but the island is 4750mm long so we won't be short of space. Our friends one that is 1200mm wide is great but its hard to use it wisely. They have lots of serving stuff on the far side of ti and its a pain in the butt because of the layout of the kitchen. There are a few spots on the near side to put things but its really wasteful design wise. They bought the place as is so its not their fault but they agree its not optimal. 900mm island gives the minimum space(IMO) for a breakfast bar but I would think 1000mm(400+600) is much better. If I had infinite room I would have 700mm bench on wall with cooktop in it, 1200mm walkway, 1200mm island with 700 working space and 500mm breakfast bar and at least 1500mm walking space/chair space behind. Thats 4600mm and we only have 3820mm. The thing we made sure of is that it would work. We dummied up the room sizes in our old house before we knocked it down. Re: 700mm Bench Depth & Island Width 12Nov 02, 2011 3:56 pm Going for the 600+ benchtops is fine but if you have a floorstanding stove and want the front of the stove to line up with the doors either side, you are either going to have bring it out from the wall, leaving a gap at the rear. Make the benchtop 700mm deep and the problem gets worse. You could of course have the stove back against the wall but then the front of it is back 50-100mm from the cupboard doors. This isn't a problem of course if you have a cooktop with an underbench or wall oven. Island benches should be minimum of 900mm deep preferably 1000mm just for the extra legroom on the dining side. The distance between bench and island in my opinion shouldn't be less than 1200mm. We have friends who entertain a bit in a kitchen with 1000mm space and when there are two in the kitchen it is just that much more of a squeeze to get past especially if the oven or fridge door is open. I also know a couple of kitchen designers who both reckon no more than 1350mm between because then you have to take more than two steps ( something about the work efficiency triangle I suppose ). We're having 1300mm between ours with 1200mm at either end of the island bench. I guess it comes down to your space available and what you are comfortable with. Stewie Re: 700mm Bench Depth & Island Width 13Nov 03, 2011 8:31 pm I have the following: * 720 mm benchtop agianst the wall * 1200 mm gap * 900 mm island (giving a nice 300 overhang) I like the arrangement. I did this mainly for an adequate fridge cavity depth, but it is nice all round Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 The distance between my DEBs varies from 4.1m at the narrowest to 8.1m at the widest. 5 27560 Hi, only for walking. It is a narrow 1.5m paved area next to house. 2 5658 Thanks again for this information. If you do hear anything different, would be great to know 4 8457 |
