Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Oct 24, 2011 6:21 pm Presently awaiting our tender from the builder, and trying to think of the "can we's" and "what if's" and "how much to". The Things we forgot list is a tremendous help. Question for those more knowledgeable than me (most everyone !). Depending on funds at the moment, we expect to install Solar power next year sometime, (2 storey house). - Is there anything we can/should get done to the roof during construction (extra supports etcetc ?) in anticipation of a solar system being installed at a future date ? - I imagine the electrician could also do some "in anticipation" work in the meter box etc. Many thanks for your comments and advice Re: Solar power - preparation now for installation later 2Oct 24, 2011 6:33 pm Many solar companies give a lower price if you have a colorbond roof. Re: Solar power - preparation now for installation later 3Oct 27, 2011 2:20 pm Hello, with regard to installing solar at a future time... During construction stage ask you electrician to run a solar cable to a north facing side of the roof.. This cable is coloured differently ( black ) and can withstand higher tolerances etc.. this is all that is needed.. Be prepared for a high dollar sign on the cable.. most electricians who do not install solar every day, never carry this cable.. therefore they would have to go out and buy a drum of it. It has a vveerryyy high price tag, and no doubt you would be charged for the entire roll. id expect anywhere between 300-800 to run the cable.. hope this helped chris Electrical - Automation - Smart wiring - New homes - Commercial - Data cabling] 1300 050 315 www.cenemelectrical.com.au www.facebook.com/cenemelectrical Re: Solar power - preparation now for installation later 4Oct 27, 2011 2:23 pm Agreed. We're almost finished our build and we asked for the builder to do a Solar pre-installation. They ran the big black cable and what looks like some smaller grey control cables from the North facing wall to the space in the garage which is right behind the meter box. They charged us about $385.00 to do that.
