My reason is because I have seen it done before and it looks like crap and scratches very easy. If you can't afford it can you live with it till you can afford it ? Agreed! Maybe if you want to freshen up the look, you can paint designs on them with a stencil? It might have a charming rustic look to it. It depends on your decor of course but mabye could be a good alternative! here is a great how-to.
