Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 17, 2011 3:26 pm Hi All, I am new to this forum ( to forum's in general ) and stumbled upon this forum thanks to Google. I am hoping someone is able to assist me with a breakfast bar query. We have just purchased our first home and will be replacing the kitchen as the current one is over 30 years old and while it has stood the test of time it is NOT functional at all ( There is no room for our fridge in the kitchen and we have had to leave the fridge in a corner of the room approx 6 meters away from everything else). Anyway as well as a kitchen that has space for our fridge, We are wanting a breakfast bar that sits on the end of a cabinet on one end and on a Waterfall on the other end ( making our U shaped kitchen into a G shaped one) The cabinet maker we went to said that a 40mm Waterfall will need more support that just a 600mm cabinet on one end and the only way i could have my breakfast bar was to have a supporting beam in the middle. Is this true? My Breakfast bar will only be 1300 mm away from the cabinet ( making it 1900mm in length). I have seen numerous pictures with the look i am after and am willing to increase the thickness of the bar to 80mm if it means i have what i want. You can see a picture of the concept i am after in the attached link ( The first picture clearly demonstrates what i want) http://completehome.com.au/kitchens/kit ... id=6287208 Thank you so much for your help in advance. Re: Caesarstone Breakfast Bar with Waterfall on one end 2Oct 17, 2011 6:47 pm One thing you have to keep in mind that the 80mm is not going to do anything as they only face the edge of the slab with the extra thickness. Recon stone comes in thicknesses of 20mm or sometimes 30mm. To get thicker edging they either stick 2 slabs together (for 40mm) or as I said earlier stick a thin strip (or mitre the edge) with another strip to give the illusion of thickness. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Caesarstone Breakfast Bar with Waterfall on one end 4Oct 18, 2011 10:15 am @ Kyton, I realize an 80mm bench is a just a a standard width bench with extra thickness around the edge, what i mean was have a waterfall end that is 80mm thick. Surely that provides enough support? @ renomart, That is a great idea! I wonder why he didn't just offer me that instead of telling me i couldn't do it. Then again i basically told the guy how to do the layout as his ideas were not practical for us so maybe he wanted to pay me back for telling him how i wanted things.... Anyway thank you for your replies Re: Caesarstone Breakfast Bar with Waterfall on one end 5Oct 18, 2011 11:45 am Namaki - I am pretty sure the waterfall again is only "boxed" in. From memory mine (and I have 80mm waterfalls on each end of my island bench) is boxed back to where the cupboards start. So it "looks" solid 80mm no matter what angle you look at it from but the center of it would just be the 20mm thickness. Hopefully Renomart's suggestion will be the deciding factor for you. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Caesarstone Breakfast Bar with Waterfall on one end 7Oct 18, 2011 1:04 pm I love the look and am hoping for something similar in my new kitchen. I have also seen it in many, many magazines so it has to be possible. Maybe it wasn't that it couldn't be done, but rather, he didn't want to do it!!!! I will be very interested to see how you go. Good luck. Re: Caesarstone Breakfast Bar with Waterfall on one end 8Oct 18, 2011 1:36 pm I would only be guessing but my thoughts were that they would use two 20mm slabs with two narrow bits mitred in between the slabs. So sort of like this:- [_] If you get my drift - otherwise they would have to use 4 slabs of stone to get the 80mm thickness. And trust me not only would that cost a fortune - BUT it would weigh a tonne!! I saw how four strong men struggled getting my slabs into my house for my kitchen. My island bench is 4m in length, 80mm in depth on top and waterfall sides (mitred and boxed) then there is a middle upstand section that is in 40mm (two slabs glued together) again with waterfall edges that runs about 1.5m wide to hide the sink. Some things are worth waiting for. Minimum overhang into gutter must be 50mm, turn down tool should not split the sheet. it seems wrong tool for the profile was used, the flashing cannot slope back.
