I believe btherl is talking about expansion joints in your brickwork. From the pictures you have posted there's no distinguishable gap, say for example, Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ . Check your structural plans for where these joints (sometimes called articulation joints) should be. Re: Framing stage concerns, advice please 8Aug 09, 2011 9:33 am What I mean by "doesn't align" is that the gap between the bricks doesn't line up vertically. If you look at the wall next to the door in your first picture, the gaps between bricks all line up. But under the door they don't, they are staggered. A bit like this: self::bbcode_second_pass_code_cb The bottom course of bricks doesn't line up with the third course. It's possible they didn't consider window and door locations when they did the first course, and then they had to adjust it so the bricks would look nice next to the doors and windows. What irkj posted is what I am talking about with expansion joints. My understanding is most houses need them every 5 metres, to stop the mortar cracking when soil under the house settles. Instead, the bricks can move along the expansion joint and nothing cracks. But in your house I can't see any along the whole side wall. Maybe you are building on very solid ground and don't need them? I would ask your builder about it just to be sure. Actually I think I'm talking about articulation joints, as discussed here: http://www.boral.com.au/Images/common/c ... /1_209.pdf That document says articulation joints are not required for stable sites. If you do not mind, I got one more concern regards to the noggins of frame like pic below, I do not think it is the right way to hammer the panel between stud and is there a solution to this? Thanks heaps http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h369/umehomes/Noggins-2.jpg http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h369/umehomes/Noggins-3.jpg Re: Framing stage concerns, advice please 10Aug 09, 2011 10:47 pm Is there any wall wrap behind that brickwork? That noggin should really be replaced as its too short. Doing the brickwork before frame is completed doesn't allow for the inspector to see the external side of the frame. This means he can't be sure the bracing has been nailed off correctly. Success is the result of good judgment, good judgment is the result of experience, and experience is often the result of bad judgment! Re: Framing stage concerns, advice please 11Aug 20, 2011 8:58 pm ![]() 2. Is it the right procedure to start some brick work while roof truss still not complete? 3. See the brick work at garage area, is it normal no timber frame in the garage area but only brick? Brick layer said they will build additional brick column to support roof truss on garage therefore no timber frame. Thanks heaps With points 2 and 3, just remember that the brick wall does not support the weight of the roof, the brick wall is just a decorative/protective skin for the timber frame, which is where all the strength is. So yes no problem to start doing the wall before the roof trusses are complete and with the garage as they have said they will build some support columns. This will probably support a lintel which in turn will support the trusses. Thanks for all replies. I just noticed now the pictures I added to post right on top of page were wrong.
